iMac mid 2010 - Continuous buzzing noise

Hi everyone.

My iMac 27” Mid 2010 has a continuous buzzing noise from the back of the upper left corner. It is continuous now, but at the beginning it was lower, and sporadic, from time to time. After a recent weird issue (corrupted RAM module, Time Machine external drive got unusable), the noise is now higher, and never ceases.

I’ve extensively read all threads and info about this type of noise, and most answers do point to a possible PSU issue. Or maybe the backlight board.

Since a new PSU is around 140 €, has anybody experimented this issue? Any advice? I can provide a video to further understand the problem.

The computer has run flawlessly for the last ten years… This is the first and only issue to date.

Thanks in advance.

@aurefixit what temp is your iMac running it? Does the temp make a difference in sound? Does the sound change when you increase or decrease the brightness on your iMac.

Buzzing is usually caused by mechanical vibration. Most commonly it is due to the transformers core/cores vibrating. That is the reason why you often find glue between the two separate parts of the core. I would be looking around the transformers to see if anything is wrong there.

Hi oldturkey03.

Temperature is ok I think, between 36 and 48º C (Samsung SSD Evo). It was high for a few days after the main incident (restarts, etc), but I think it was due to Spotlight rebuilding the index. I also rebuilt Mail search, as I lost them.

And yes, the noise gets higher when increasing the brightness, and a bit lower when decreasing it.

As I was saying Dan in another answer, I've started the session with almost no noise, and in this very moment the noise is slowly getting noticeable. I guess.

I am thinking about changing the PSU, and will follow your suggestion for sure. It will be the second time I open the computer (SSD change was the first), so fingers crossed.

Any other idea, really wellcome :)

Cheers.

@aurefixit you mentioned that you researched this and that most people replaced the PSU. You also read that not a lot of people actually fixed this with a new PSU. I am not convinced that this is a capacitor etc. issue. Take a really good look at the board (would be nice if you could determine where it originates from with your iMac apart. I am still thinking transformer or coils since those are more prone to becoming noisey. Let us know what you decide on and how it works out for you.

Things I would do is make sure the AC outlet is properly wired using a simple AC tester like this one 3-Wire Receptacle Tester. I would also check the breaker panel to make sure the main grounding cable is in good shape it’s either a bare heavy gage copper wire or one that is colored green which connects to your building water pipe or grounding rod/s. Make sure the connections are not corroded and the connections are metal to metal. You may want to get an electrician look at it if you think its too much for you to deal with.

I would also recommend making sure you have a good surge suppressor or look at getting a good UPS.

A power disruption could explain your RAM and TimeMachine issues which a good UPS would prevent. Sadly, a power surge could have damaged your power supply which can explain the buzzing noise.

I’ve replace quite a few power supplies which buzzed. But you really need to start at the outlet making sure you’ve got things covered there before you replace the power supply.

Update (03/12/2020)

We don’t have a guide for your system but the 2011 is exactly the same. Here’s that guide: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Power Supply Replacement and here’s the needed part iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309, 2374, 2390 or 2429 Power Supply and here’s a used one which is a bit cheaper iMac 27" Power Supply, 310W (09/10/11)

As your brightness alters the sound I would also recommend inspecting the LED driver board. Here’s the guide to take it out iMac Intel 27" EMC 2390 LED Driver Board Replacement and here’s the needed part iMac 27" LED Backlight Board. Check the coils on the back side for damage.

Hi Dan.

Sorry, different time zone, I live in Spain :)

Thanks for your answer. To be precise, our electrical installations here are a bit different, but anyway, I have checked everything with no result.

Thing is this has been the same installation for the last years, since I installed the computer here. No changes at all. The only change was the recent addition (months ago) of one of those TP-LINK wifi outlets. I bought it to control costs, you know. I really doubt this is the problem.

I forgot to say I found a partial solution I found on some forum weeks ago: completely removing the power cable for several hours (during the night) did work, at least for several days. After that, the noise has been consistently high and anoying, until... now.

I tried again last night after posting here, removed the cable and surprise, right now while I am writing the noise is almost inaudible. But I am not naive, I know the noise will be back, for sure.

In any case, I will search for a good UPS, you are right.

Thanks a lot, Dan, for bringing together all the info.

Cheers.
