iMac mid 2010 - Continuous buzzing noise
Hi everyone.
My iMac 27” Mid 2010 has a continuous buzzing noise from the back of the upper left corner. It is continuous now, but at the beginning it was lower, and sporadic, from time to time. After a recent weird issue (corrupted RAM module, Time Machine external drive got unusable), the noise is now higher, and never ceases.
I’ve extensively read all threads and info about this type of noise, and most answers do point to a possible PSU issue. Or maybe the backlight board.
Since a new PSU is around 140 €, has anybody experimented this issue? Any advice? I can provide a video to further understand the problem.
The computer has run flawlessly for the last ten years… This is the first and only issue to date.
Thanks in advance.

@aurefixit what temp is your iMac running it? Does the temp make a difference in sound? Does the sound change when you increase or decrease the brightness on your iMac.
Buzzing is usually caused by mechanical vibration. Most commonly it is due to the transformers core/cores vibrating. That is the reason why you often find glue between the two separate parts of the core. I would be looking around the transformers to see if anything is wrong there.

Hi oldturkey03.
Temperature is ok I think, between 36 and 48º C (Samsung SSD Evo). It was high for a few days after the main incident (restarts, etc), but I think it was due to Spotlight rebuilding the index. I also rebuilt Mail search, as I lost them.
And yes, the noise gets higher when increasing the brightness, and a bit lower when decreasing it.
As I was saying Dan in another answer, I've started the session with almost no noise, and in this very moment the noise is slowly getting noticeable. I guess.
I am thinking about changing the PSU, and will follow your suggestion for sure. It will be the second time I open the computer (SSD change was the first), so fingers crossed.
Any other idea, really wellcome :)
Cheers.

@aurefixit you mentioned that you researched this and that most people replaced the PSU. You also read that not a lot of people actually fixed this with a new PSU. I am not convinced that this is a capacitor etc. issue. Take a really good look at the board (would be nice if you could determine where it originates from with your iMac apart. I am still thinking transformer or coils since those are more prone to becoming noisey. Let us know what you decide on and how it works out for you.
