Going back to FACTORY settings? CD be easiest? Please help a NANA.

I have a 27" 1TB iMAC Serial Number YD13804QDB6. My granddaughter wants to take it to her house. What is the BEST and EASIEST way to reset it back to factory settings? Would it be buying a OS X CD to start from the beginning? Please help. She is a sweetie pie. Thank you so very much.

@justanana - I think you picked the wrong system!

Using your S/N you appear to have thins system: 27" iMac 27 3.2 GHz Core i3 (Mid-2010)

It doesn't offer Internet recovery! But it does offer the hidden recovery partition.

Thanks, Dan!!!! What is a hidden recovery partition? Oh my goodness. Am I going to be able to do this for her? What if I just buy the OS X DVD? Would that work? Thanks a million for your awesome response. I appreciate it very much!

@justanana I would just make a USB install drive. No confusion and if someone cloned it, you lost that partition anyway and need to start from ground zero with a recovery USB anyway.

Thank you. Will do. I will let you know how it works out. I may need to ask another question or 2. Your time and responses were so very appreciated.

This isn’t an Internet Recovery machine, but it is a recovery partition model. You will need to refer to this guide to make install media. You can take it up to Sierra (10.12) or High Sierra (10.13), which is something you and your granddaughter need to talk about. If you truly have a 2014, you can also use internet recovery. I would try Sierra since the APFS opt-out is a little end user unfriendly and only use High Sierra if you have to and can figure out the APFS bypass. APFS is designed for SSDs; not hard drives.

I run High Sierra on my 2011 MBP, but I also got around the APFS conversion by downloading my copy from the dosdude patch tool - the Sierra tool can be found here. Don’t waste time with a DVD; 16GB USB drives are usually ~$5 with 32GB drives being ~$7-8 and easily worth the extra bucks if you can afford it.

Also, take a backup of the files before you erase it since they will be lost. Get a 2-4TB external hard drive and use Time Machine for the job.

Thanks. I will try this. I don’t care about files. We have everything on newer Macs. I just want to take everything off and start it from factory settings for our little princess. She is a musician. and will do great things on this machine. Thanks, Again. I will try tomorrow and come back and tell you how I made out.

@nick - Can you post the recovery partition steps or how to create a bootable OS installer so they have that information too.

door

@danj Fixed. I went off of the machine they selected.

Also mentioned how I have a APFS-free High Sierra install but mentioned Sierra. I think the OP would be better off with Sierra since APFS avoidance with High Sierra isn't something most end users will know how to do - but we don't know what the granddaughter will use so it's best they make the final decision.

I think it's Command R for the recovery partition but I also don't rely on it being there with how many people think cloning is still viable when it isn't.
