Ice maker freezing up

I checked whirlpool because there isnt an option for samsung. But anyway my samsung french door fridge is 2 years old. The ice maker started freezing up and then when it gets so much ice back there on the walls, the ice maker quits working. I had it serviced and the repair people completely replaced the ice maker. It worked for about 2 months and now back to the same issue. Its now come down to there isnt any more that the repair man can do so he said. So my question is does anyone else out there have this issue and what is the answer to fixing this thing? Every month now i have to defrost behind the ice maker and then it works for another month or so. One thing to note also sometimes and not everytime when i first press the ice door to get ice on the door a trickle of water comes out before the ice. Any help would be appreciated.

They did check the psi the last time they were here. It was fine. It makes ice fine until it freezes up , then it needs defrosted like a 1960’s freezer and we start all over again. Is there a way to post a photo to this thread?

I have a Whirlpool double door with unit on front of freezer door. Its about 10 years old. Recently it started freezing up around bottom edges of ice bucket, forcing it up, resulting in it spilling a bucket of ice onto floor when door was opened.. The problem appears to be two fold. Using Crushed Ice allows very small pieces of ice to melt in a few seconds and get under bucket, building up quickly, pushing bucket up and out of its holder. The other culprit is the extreme relative humidity of the coastal south, which causes condensation almost immediately once door is open. It then trickles down and freezes under the bucket. The "Quick Fix" is to discontinue use of crushed ice feature and use only the cubed feature. My wife told me this. I was skeptical but tested her theory. After not using crushed ice, problem disappeared and no ice was spilled. I then used the crushed feature to have issue return in a matter of days. The permanent fix appears to be a new bucket and checking for blocked small drains.

I have the same refrigerator doing the same thing except mine does it with cubed or crushed ice I have found looking at the prints that there is a heater that keeps the dispenser door defrosted and prevents this. The problem is the heater is not replaceable as far as I can tell when looking in the refrigerator. Does anyone know if this heater can be replaced replacedfeeder can be replaced

Never use a blow dryer to remove frost/ice inside the unit. Samsung has had a lot of issues with that ice maker design. I thought they had finally resolved the issue in court last year by redesigning the ice room and components in it. Apparently not. I have had several new whirlpools that have iced up as well.

I’ve found serveral reasons for the I/M to freeze.

The fan behind the I/M fails. The fan circulates the cold air over the i/M to freeze the ice. If the fan has quit, the ice will harvest without being frozen. It dumps the water and ice into the bin. Some ice remains in tray causing it to overfill. This frozen mess causes a mess.

2- I/M gears are worn due to water deposits

3- Water fill valve sticking causing an overfill.

4-the most common reason I’ve seen is the I/M arm on the side of I/M. The metal arm you move up to turn off I/m and down to turn it on. There is a white piece if plastic attaches to this are. It gets stuck on the side of I\M and causes issues. I shorten it by cutting off enough so it won’t get hung up on anything. Still working just fine today.

I don’t think we have the same fridge. We have the French doors.

Our old fridge did exactly what you are talking about, it had the metal arm.

This does not. Thanks for your response anyway.

I’m certain this will help someone!

rf28hmedbsr/aa is a partial model number for a Samsung Refrigerator. To see specific parts for your Refrigerator, please choose your exact model from below or choose the model that's closest.

  • Samsung  Refrigerator Model RF28HMEDBSR/AA-0001 thru Samsung  Refrigerator Model RF28HMEDBSR/AA-0014

Cause 1

Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve is an electrically-controlled valve that opens to supply water to the dispenser and ice maker. If the water inlet valve is defective, or if it has insufficient pressure, it won’t allow water to flow through. As a result, the ice maker won’t make ice. The valve requires at least 20 psi to function properly. Make sure that the water pressure to the valve is at least 20 psi. If the water pressure is sufficient, use a multimeter to check for power to the water inlet valve. If the water inlet valve has sufficient pressure and is getting power, but the ice maker won’t fill with water to make ice, replace the water inlet valve.

Yes! I’m having the same issue, and I’ve noticed the trickle of water also.

I have to de-ice the ice maker on the sides and bottom of the ice maker itself.

(Not under the tray). I also have the French door Samsung.

Any ideas what’s going on? I’m tired of not having ice when I get home.

How would I know the PSI? And how difficult is water inlet valve to change?

Samsung should cover new icemaker. They did for us. Also the computer board needs replaced as well. But now I see this post is a few years ago! 😂

I have a similar problem with Whirlpool French door unit, only my water trickles out from under the fridge. Already replaced the ice maker once, now we have to defrost every month to make the unit resume working. Our appliance repair consulted with Whirlpool, which said that it is a known problem and that basically any ice maker in the fridge portion of a unit (as opposed to a side by side) is just going to have problems. Manufacturers haven’t figured out a way to keep them from freezing up because of the temperature differential. Until my unit dies, I’m probably switching to a countertop ice maker.

Our Samsung icemaker frosts up so that the ice hangs up on the frost on the side of the tray and can't fall into the bin. Then it melts and refreezes of course as the defrost heaters come on. So I keep having to pry the ice out then melt the frost build up with a blow dryer. This is about once a week. So aggravating. Wish this was a solution but not sure there is one.

Sorry to hear that! Thankfully our repair guy contacted Samsung and they sent the icemaker plus the computer board. Also a part for the drawer that breaks from opening and closing that sets off alerts. So we only had to pay for labor which was enough. It's been a whole year and just froze up. Once in a while we can deal with. But who knows how long it will last. I hope whirlpool gave you your icemaker that you had to replace. What a pain!
