How to run diagnostics

I have a Mac Mini 2010 server model running El Captain. I bought it used and it already came with El Captain installed on it. I would like to run a diagnostic test on it. Unfortunately, when I invoke OPT+D and I wait for Internet Recovery….it comes back saying “AHT does not support this machine”. I am not able to run diagnostics the typical way by pressing D on the keyboard. When I try that the screen is white/grey and eventually it boots normally.

I am guessing Internet Recovery is newer than the machine therefore I can’t run it. I could use the original DVD and install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard then try and run diagnostics after a successful installation.

You should try to install the MacOS from the disc and try diagnostics.

Why do you want to run diagnostics on it? What is it doing wrong?

The fan is spinning at a higher rate than normal.

How about installing a thermal monitoring app that also gives us info on the fan, like TG Pro. Install it and take a snapshot of the main window so we can see all of the sensors and fan (you may need to adjust the windows size to get it all) post it here for us to see Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag

As I said before, I tried to invoke diagnostic by press D and computer doesn’t go into diagnostics. I get a white/grey screen then it will boot normally which tells me there is no diagnostic folder or proper set of diagnostic files on this computer. Since the computer has been wiped and installed with El Capitan, most likely the proper files are missing.

The purpose of running diagnostics is to find out if there is a hardware problem and what type of problem is it. As suggested I will install a thermal monitoring software and post my results.

Restart your system and hold the D key to launch the built-in diagnostics.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

If that fails then you’ll need to launch your system with a newer version of MacOS as Apple did have a bug in some OS versions for the diagnostics to work properly.

Here’s a bit more on this mess Fixing Apple Hardware Test (AHT)
