Hi @jwamb ,

Here’s a link to the service manual for your laptop.

Scroll to the bottom of p.29 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedures to remove the system fan so that you can clean it and the vents.

You may also use the opportunity when you have dis-assembled that laptop this far to remove/ replace the thermal paste that is covering the CPU, as the old application of paste has no doubt dried out and is not as effective. Be careful as you do this so as to not damage anything. As always with electronics be gentle. ;-)

More like don't even think about opening it until you get the repaste done with how complicated it is on this generation of E5 series. Get it over with since the motherboard needs to come out.

My E6 series isn't as horrible (bottom cover only), but you need to remove the heatsink to unbolt the fan, which in turn requires new thermal paste anyway.

It is overheating because your cpu fan is not makeing enought airflow to cool your components and you cant really fix it only if you replace the fan or make sure the wires witch power the fan are conected well and thermal paste is enought to cover the cpu and the gpu
