The object viewed is doubled

when i look through my Bausch & Lomb binoculars the viewed object does not appear as a single object but doubled. Or in other words the two lenses are not lining up so when you look at the single object you are viewing you see double vision instead where the object overlaps. Can this be repaired. This set of binoculars is almost brand new and I suspect they were maybe dropped which knocked the viewing alignment out. thank you for your help.

Hi @conch70 ,

As they are “almost brand new” I suggest that you consult the warranty statement that is usually found in the User Manual that should have come with the binoculars, as to what you have to do to make a claim for a manufacturer’s warranty repair or replacement.

According to this User Manual, in the USA and Canada, there is a ''lifetime limited warranty'' on the product by the manufacturer, subject to conditions obviously. Hopefully it is the same where you are.

The problem is that binoculars are not in collimation. This might have happened if they got dropped or knocked, but may also have been this way when bought. did you check them? Outside, In daylight?

re-collimating is not for the faint of heart, and no conditional alignment is not the same thing.

If new take them back under warranty, good luck if you dropped them

What causes it, is that one of two events have occurred.

1.The prisms have shifted in the mountings

or

2.one or other of the doublets have been rotated out of optical alignment.

The main reason for this is that they have received a severe knock at some stage.

It is possible that they came from the factory like this, which is a different issue.

One issue would be that the focusing is not being done properly to align the images coming thru both the lenses. The other issue is, if this instrument was dropped or banged against something, that might have caused the prism to shift. If so, that prism needs to be realigned to get the images to align and for you to get a sharp image. You will need to open it and realign the prism or get it done thru someone proficient in rectifying such instruments.
