scanner not working after frame broke glass

try http://www.everprint.com, you need to know the part no. I believe they also have manuals. You can also try http://www.fixyourownprinter.com I've been lucky and got a service manual from there recently.

Also museum glass can be used to replace the scanner glass. It has the same anti-glare coatings as scanner glass. It's cost is about roughly the same as scanner glass of which neither is cheap. As a cheap last resort, you can get a replacement scanner on ebay for much less that the replacement glass will cost.

You might try to find a non-printing machine on eBay. These things are sold as a loss leader to get you to buy ink. Rarely are they worth trying to fix. A new one on Amazon is about $75.00: http://www.amazon.com/HP-Photosmart-Prin...

This price includes $25 worth of ink. Some things are just made to be disposable and ink jet printers are at the top of the list. Laser printers are becoming the same way, a full set of toners cost about what the whole thing does. Sorry

+ I fully agree with what mayer says here. I would like to add that you may be better off looking to Craigslist.org for your local area to find another one to use or acquire your glass. I see AIO printers like yours for free all the time in my area. People give them away once they figure out they can buy another printer for the same price (or less) of replacing the ink cartridges.

a quick scan of ebay and the like show that it's cheaper to buy new... ho hum.

+ agreed with all of the above comments. Even if you got the manual for the how, you still have to find the new glass which in itself is an obvious challenge. This is one of those cases where economics should outweigh the need to fix it :-)

@oldturkey03 The issue is consumer-grade roadkill :-(. None of it is worth repairing, or the ink/toner on them ends up being as much as the printer (or you have stupidity like HP+ DRM combined with cheap Samsung laser engines now, and it probably carries the hard stop when the chip reads empty unless HP disabled that part of Samsung's engines). The business-class stuff like the MS/MX, high-end Canon engines (MF series), and others in the business space stand a better chance of being viable. Color laser is just inherently expensive.

Why do you think I favor business class models? You pay more new and used (ex: ~$250 for a nice MS621 that was $850 new), but they're built to last and can be repaired. Certain parts like formatters are not DIY capable due to the programming needs.

Open up the printer, take out the old glass, get some new picture glass 3mm cut to size, stick it in using sticky fixer strip. Cost £5. Satisafaction: great.

How do you take out the glass on a H.P. 8600 all in one. I have replaced glass on other h.p. units which has a torcx heads, but I cannot see where to take this one out.

Picture glass will not work. It doesn't have the anti-glare coatings that scanner glass has. The anti-glare coating is what makes scanner glass expensive. Museum glass on the other hand will work as it has the anti-glare coating. However it is just as expensive to a bit more expensive than scanner glass.

Scanner glass is replaceable in almost all instances, but it entirely depends on the thickness of your scanners glass. Most scanner glasses are 3mm thin, so basically you'll have to measure the size (length and width) and have it cut from shops that specialize in glass works. And all you need to know is how to replace it the new glass back into the scanner.
