Boots to grey screen with vertical bars

Boots to only to apple logo then grey screen with vertical bars in grey, white and black. However, it does boot all the way to desktop in Safe mode, still has the bars on right side however. AHT, even the extended one, said "no problems found". External monitor shows the same vertical stripes (however, on the left side of the screen!) I am ready to take out the GE Force 8800 GS and do the fix, if you say this is likely my issue. Can you please advise me on 1) is it my graphics card? and 2) how exactly to do the reflow of solder with the hardware Mayer reference from Ebay ?

How about pasting a few images of the screen and the external display so we can make sure. Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag

Here is what it looks like when I boot in safe mode. The external monitor does not show any icons and has the stripes on the left side..... [image|1399019][image|1399020][image|1399021]

From way you've stated it does sound like your GPU card is failing. Here's the part info for the replacement part. Bars tend to be bad Video RAM so you'll likely need a new board

  • 2007 24” iMac Video card
    • 661-4426 ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro, 256 MB
  • Early 2008 24” iMac Video Cards
    • 661-4663 MXM III, M76XT+/256MB GDDR3
    • 661-4664 MXM III, G92GT+/512MB GDDR3 (CTO)

We don't have IFIXIT guide for your system, but this one will get you there: iMac Intel 24" EMC 2111 GPU Assembly Replacement

You'll need a good thermal paste for the GPU and you'll need thermal pads for the RAM chips after you fully clean the old thermal paste & pads when you re-mount the heat sink.

May be a candidate for a GPU reflow.

@mayer - I'm suspecting the VRAM is gone here Vs the GPU its self.

Thank you guys, I just bought the equipment Mayer suggested in a similar post, to try the reflow, and watched the appropriate videos on youtube. Since I can boot in Safe mode I know that this machine has the N-Vidia Ge Force 8800 GS with 512 MB RAM. Thank you for your insights. To replece the video card is about $300 , but there are also repair service on Ebay who can do a pro job for CAN$150 So I figure I will try the reflow first, since I want to eventually be able to fix this stuff all on my desk. Dan , does your last comment mean that a reflow will not be enough, if the VRAM is "gone" ....or come unsoldered?

Also exactly what thermal paste should I buy? There seem to be two different kinds being uses, a white and a grey?

door

Yes! Apple later on used a gapping paste (white) on the VRAM chips and uses a normal TIM on the GPU. Here's the products I use: [gekoppeld product ontbreekt of is uitgeschakeld: IF179-010] & Arctic Silver ArctiClean to fully clean the heat sink & chips.

For thermal pads I use:

- Conductive Silicone Thermal Pad 0.5mm

- Conductive Silicone Thermal Pad 1.0mm

- Conductive Silicone Thermal Pad 1.5mm

I use a feeler gage to size the gap and use the size thats slightly snug.

OK, my GPU came back from "reballing"( $US 70) and now it is completely kaputt. Lesson learned. Reballing without chip replacement is a waste of money on these this GPUs. The 8800GS is a time bomb, no more, no less. Who wants my smoldering remains of a 24" 2008 iMac?

@jurgenkoppen sorry to hear this. Yup, your analyses is complete correct. Unless you repalce the actual "chip" there is no way a reball will fix it. Anyhow, consider the 2nd "R" for reuse and keep your panel. Get universal driver for it so you can at least use it as an external monitor. Keep's with the spirit of iFixit to keep stuff out of the landfill.

@oldturkey03 , thank you for your note. And you are right of course, I do want to make maximum use out of the wreckage. Can you tell me more about the universal driver? Between your website here, and Louis Rossmann's videos , I have become so inspired to become a Mac techy that my room turned slowly into a lab with microscopes and solder equipment. Fixed about a dozen "vintage" machines, and loving it. Thank you all for your most excellent advise and energy....cheers, J

@jurgenkoppen take a look at this question/answer. It is not very difficult but as a monitor those things can kick butt

Can I Mod an early 2009 24" iMac to external monitor?

@oldturkey03 , very cool!!!! Thank you so much, I now have something to explore...
