Grey screen when strating up the system

My system is facing a problem with start up currently. When it startup a grey screen is what appears and it sticks like that even after i hear the windows welcome sound and the system starts. But after the welcome some parts of the screen shows the blue usual color of windows blury no icons but still blue parts in thenscreen while the rest of the screen is still grey. When this first happend it happed for a moment and then it comes back to normal but now it's stick to the grey screen.

Is this problem a gpu problem that can be fixed\reduced by changing thermal paste??

Is it hard drive that i need to change?

Should i format the system??

Pls what should i do i really don't know.

Thanks for your time and help

Hi,

Try connecting an external monitor to see what the display is like on it.

Depending on result will direct what to do next

I plugged the the laptop to a screen and it works

I think it's a monitor problem.

Is there a way of fixing a monitor or should i replace it?

Hi,

Unless the laptop's video cable has become disconnected from the motherboard or from the display panel itself, you'll have to replace the display.

Here is a link to the service manual for your laptop.

Scroll to p.62 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the display assembly. Unfortunately you nearly have to completely remove the display panel to check the video cable connection on the panel

Also on p.62 you'll find the display part numbers appropriate to the various models, if it seems that there is no problem with the cable connections and you have to get a new panel.

Use the part number only in the browser search box, when you search online to find suppliers of the part.

Hopefully this is of some help.

I was going to open the laptop this weekend but just now i discovered new thing relevant to the monitor.

I tried to plug the laptop to a tv screen and it did work but when i used extended screen my laptop monitor worked and it showed as a two extended screens and no problems in screen colors but when i switched to duplicate it went back to grey.

Does this mean it's a software problem?? Or what is it a messed up laptop monitor

Hi,

Well the good news is that it appears (pun intended) that the laptop screen works and therefore it isn't a hardware problem.

I don't know your particular laptop but can you try and reset the graphics properties from dual monitors back to showing the laptop screen as the default screen, just in case the duplicate or extended setup has the external monitor as the "main' or 'default' screen?

Hopefully it then should say default or similar under the rectangle depicting the laptop screen

I opened my laptop and i got to this laptop monitor panel back cables

Iamge: Laptop monitor panel https://imgur.com/a/jp8ln

I don't see any suspicious electric shortcut or any damged cable

Should i go deeper? Is it worth it?

Should i unplug this yellow wire and place it again?

The problem is i have seen it work for a while and then goes back grey? There has to be something wrong??

Thanks mr.jayeff for all your help.

Hi,

I assume that you've tried reseating the video cable at the motherboard end?

If you have, then perhaps you should try reseating the cable at the monitor end. Be gentle when you do this.

If it still doesn't work, does anything happen when you move the lid back and forth? Does the image come and go? If so it may be that the cable is faulty where it passes through the hinge area.

If you cannot find out where the problem is you may have to take it to a reputable, professional laptop repair service and ask for a quote to repair the laptop as the problem might be either the motherboard, the video cable or the laptop monitor and they should have the equipment to determine this.

Sorry that I can't be of more help.

My problem was the same in hp pavilion g6 laptop. I tried to fix it with external display but it did not work. So by chance I removed the battery and used power cable also removed all the peripheral devices. Upon turning on by power button got the display back.
