Duplexing jams every time

I have about 70 of these HP M401dn printers in K12 classrooms. Most of them are tanks and just keep going. But I have about 5 of them (and growing) that jam every time the user attempts to duplex. It SEEMS like this was caused by trying to duplex 120lb card stock; I was probably the first to try it and "break" my printer but I've had others repeat the mistake.

I don't want to give up on these printers. How do I stop the duplexed prints from jamming?

I did finally find what was causing this. There is a piece of paper caught in the duplexing area underneath the printer. I made this video to demonstrate the 30 second fix.

Hi,

Here is an image taken from the User Guide for your printers.

Here's a link to a page that shows the conversion from US to International Paper weights.

To me it looks as though your printers do not support the 120lb (approx. 325g) cardstock media, when using duplex mode. Perhaps that is why they are jamming

From the chart in the User manual it appears that the heaviest paper weight (or thickness) that the printer officially supports is 175g (or 65lb) and that is not in duplex mode. In duplex mode it is only 30lb (or 110g)

Thanks Jayeff. Unfortunately, I know what caused the problem, just not which piece is damaged so that I can replace it.

Hi,

Here is a link to the service manual for your printer.

Hopefully it will help to find the damaged part. Perhaps it is in the duplex drive assembly if it only occurs when trying to do duplex printing

Hi John -

I had the same problem, whether I was using genuine HP supplies (paper) or 75gm/m copy paper from Staples. Fixed it by going into the Printer Web Settings and changing the default media type from “Any” to “Plain”. This way, the printer knew to apply the right pressure when picking up the sheet from the duplexer, thus avoiding a jam.

Hope this helps.

Malcom’s answer worked for me although don’t forget to delete the current print job and power off the printer to clear the memory so that the new paper settings will be stored for the next print job.
