I don’t think it is a switch problem. When I change speeds I can hear the hum change. I took the light kit off to look at the capacitor. I ordered a new capacitor and like magic the fan started working again. I have a new capacitor. Next time it doesn’t start I’ll replace it. Until then ‘if it ain’t broke’.

Thank you for your guidance.

I found my direction switch was the problem. I can switch directions a couple of times and the fan will start working.

Hey mate, looks like the capacitor of your fan is not in a great shape. Consider changing the capacitor of your fan which has the same specs as of your faulty capacitor. If you have changed the capacitor already and its not working, then immediately turn of the fan and remove the capacitor you have just installed. The reason behind this is that you might have put a capacitor that is not in the range of your fan's rating, your fan will get damaged over time and ultimately you have to buy a new one.

Also try turning on your fan and then give it a push, If it works it is sure the capacitor problem.

Thank you for your time and advice. I found the problem was a dirty direction switch. I cleaned the switch. Fan is working like it should.

Does it spin easily by hand when off? When on and humming, try and get it spinning by hand. Does it take off and start spinning? If so your capacitor may be bad out of the box (rare but happens) or might be the wrong capacitor. If it doesn't, or doesnt spin freely like it normally does, then the motor might be bad/have bad bearings.

I have this problem. My fan spins easily by hand. Motor hums and changes when speed is changed but fan will not run. It has been this way for a year. Last year I went outside came back and fan had started working. Just turned it off to dust and it will not run. Still spins easily.

@fredric2 sounds like you need to open it up and check the capacitor. Alot of fan capacitors are square with up to 5 wires.

Thank you. That is what I was thinking. Nice to get a second opinion.

It can also be a problem with the switch connection make sure all the wires are connected properly and make sure the switch is working 100%

Found the problem was with the direction switch. When I change for the season I can work the switch a couple of times and it will start working.
