No AM on Marantz 2252

I am restoring my Marantz 2252 receiver. Everything is working well with great reception on FM and clear excellent sound. When I switch to AM there is total silence, not even static. No reception on AM. Absolute silence. The problem is probably in the tuner board, but I don't know where to start trouble shooting.

Hi @mgl99 ,

Here is a link to the service manual for your receiver. To view or to download the manual, click on the I'm not a robot checkbox, pass the verification test, click on the green Get Manual box to the right of the ticked I'm not a robot box, then either select the blue Download PDF link or the View in browser link above the Save to your collection box.

Here is an image taken from the manual which may give you a start as to where the AM section fits into the receiver circuitry

Hopefully this is of some help.

Check all the diodes on the AM board with a multi-meter.

First of all…an older unit, this should be a simple fix. There are two coils one for AM one for FM. I have seen this problem many times. The first, is to turn the unit over. There should be a cover to remove, and expose all of the soldering area. Chances are you do not know where to find the coil (coils), may have three or five pins. Don’t worry about this for now. Have a hobbiest solder any and all broken grounds. A broken ground is when you see cracked rings around any pins or tiny posts protruding from the electronic board. Solder all power transistors, heat sinks and large ICs. This is called shot gunning. You will undoubtedly resolder the coil. Chances are good AM will return. One must note as well…..if your fuse or fuses are good in this unit, chances of fixing are very good! Thanks for asking, Matt of Martins TV Repair.
