I'm looking to mod my iPod classic. I wanted to know if it'd be possible to change out the 30 pin connector for lightning and have a wireless charging coil put inside just changing the back cover to plastic/glass to have it charge?

Sorry not really possible.
Altering the connector from the 30 pin to a Lightning connectors wouldn’t really change anything. If anything you make your iPod less reliable. The physical size of the Lightning is so much smaller you would need to design a new case even then the charging or data rate wouldn’t change.
As for wireless charging I see no way to do that as you would need a completly new charging logic. Besides the work to design a workable case as it would need to be plastic or glass.

What if I have the capability of machining a new case, specifically for the lightning port? Aside from that, are you aware of any other obstacles? Imagine this is a gift, and the effort doesn't really matter, or whether or not it makes sense. Would it work?
These look at this in a different way... You speak english but you don't speak Chinese so you know what is right? 你好 Thats the rub! It's more than a physical connector it's the dialog it speaks.
Just like my simple example you would need a circuit to translate the signals & dialog there's no room for it.

I'm currently working on a wireless charging setup on both a iPod Classic 5th and 7th Gen. I learned early on that soldering the positive and negative connections from my wireless receiver coil to the battery neg/pos terminals on the iPod mainboard immediately drained any battery I had in the iPod. It would, however, charge the battery if it were on a charging station. The only solution is to pull the mainboard of the iPod out and find the pos/neg terminals that the sync port uses via USB and make the coil solders there, where it's meant to receive power. Those terminals are so tiny, though, I'm already dreading it as I'm no soldering expert. This should work, though. You can also purchase charging base stations with a receiver coil kits for about $10 on eBay. I've found even the cheapos to be reliable.

You do realize the back of the iPod is stainless steel and the charging coil needs to be mounted behind plastic or glass. in close proximity (at most 2-3mm).
You'll need mount the coil outside of the steel case and then find a way to hold it so its at least 4mm away from the steel back plate of the iPod and yet strong enough to weather the wear and tear. While this might be a fun project its not really practical.

My best idea? Emulate the Qi chargers for android
Hardest part is if the 30 pin doesn’t work correctly. I think you may be able to get an lightning to 30 pin adapter, open it up and using a lightening based qi receiver, wire it directly. The best part of this is it all should work and be testable before you even start the project
I have some old powermat based iphone 4 wireless charger cases that work but, I don’t want powermat and Qi charging stations all over the place. I want qi only because all my android devices use that

OK I was reminded that this was here and came to update this issue.
I found Energizer (the battery company) has a 30 pin qi charger case. I have bought 4 of them from ebay / amazon / etc. I have 2 of them populated by my old iphone 4. ALSO, I got an Energizer for the Iphone 3 (???) that is a little bit shorter. It also has the 30 pin built in and it works.... on my IPOD 4 (????) but its a bit too big. I bought 2 of them for $4 each delivered and got 2 silicone case covers for the ipod4 (touch) and it exactly fills the gap around the ipod4 so it fits inside perfectly. I have 2 ipod 4's and 2 iphone 4's each in a fully form fitted rubber enclosure that works perfectly on any of the current batch of QI chargers. I now have qi dock chargers throughout my home with a working iphone or ipod on them and I use them as remote controllers for my whole house audio / controllers (smartthings, Plex, email, etc). I am happy. I just thought everyone should know these are out there and they work
Sorry, I was in a rush and made a couple of mistakes.
I have 4 iphone 4s's each in an energizer case that works.
I have 2 ipod 4 touchs each in a silicone case and then in an energizer case (for iphone 3s)
all 6 of them work well. I have an ipod classic that may fit in the case as well. I will try it and report.
Best of all, you don't need to do anything. Buy that case, Insert, Drop on current QI chargers and they start charging.
