2 SSDs one laptop

HP Pavilion dv6-6115nr

I have 2 SSD drives I want to install into my laptop with a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro,

My question is which one to put in the caddy. One SSD is 500 GB the other is 120 GB.

I also upgraded my RAM from 4 GB ( 2 GB x 2 sticks ) to 16 GB ( 8 GB x 2 sticks ) if that make a difference. I appreciate your advice and thank you for your time.

Both the HD & optical drive SATA port have the same performance so it makes no difference which port you put either SSD. The only issue will be turning off HDD crash guard protection for the HD bays SATA port if you use that as your boot drive.

As to which to load Windows and your applications you need to think through what you are doing with the system. The boot drive is where one often holds the paging files and virtual RAM (this can be altered).

So if you have apps that tend to have a lot of overlays (gaming) then you're more likely want to use the larger drive as your boot drive. If you have a lot of data files then you're more likely to want to use the larger drive for your data drive and use the smaller drive as your boot drive.

Yes, adding more RAM will improve application performance and reduce the need for virtual RAM.

Dan you are very much appreciated, the service manual will definitely give me more confidence in my tear down ( replacing key board, cleaning the fan and new heat sink artic silver etc ). Just want to say thanks again.

i would use the 120gb for the os and the 500gb for storage. unless you will be downloading alot of programs etc it would be fine

It is a matter of how you use the system. If large volume 0f photos, music or videos I would go with daniel's solution. If a very large number of programs then Geoge's solution.

Put the OS on the 500GB and put it in the main slot. Use the 120GB for overflow and put it in the caddy. This way you can remove the 120GB drive if you like and still have the bulk of the 500GB.
