Has anyone replaced or repaired the Mode Dial?

Our 6D was loaned out and when it was returned the person borrowing it told us that the mode dial plate had come off, but she just put it back on. Now, however, the mode dial itself seems to be locked. The button depresses unevenly and won't seem to go down all the way to unlock allowing it to turn. Any suggest fixes or guides? I'm reluctant to pony up $350 for a Canon repair for what seems to be a small issue.

Hi,

Here is a link to the ifixit repair guide for the front and top body panel (includes mode dial) for your camera.

It may be of some help as to ascertain what the problem is.

Here is a link to a supplier of the part (if you find that it is faulty that is). It is not a recommendation to use them, it is shown to give an idea of the price. There may be others that might suit you better.

Hopefully this is of some help.

Anthony Helm, I have not done this repair. Perhaps you could pop the cap/cover from the mode dial to see what may be lodged(dust/debri/glue) and carefully pick out the debri, if glue, you may have to be very careful and use a dental pic. I posted links below for you to check out on how to disassemble the camera to access the Mode dial to repair/replace. The disassembly is listed as moderate in the guide. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Thank you both. I saw the Front & Top Cover takeapart guide, but it kind of stopped at the entire top piece and the mode dial is a few steps further.

We've taken off the dial plate and examined the inner part more closely. Clearly, the dial took a hit of some kind, depressing 1/3 of the support structures of of the dial mechanism. This is just enough to keep the dial from spinning smoothly and from keeping the center button from being able to push down deeply enough to compensate. Only with a narrow spudger can we push down on the lower dial plate enough to unlock and spin the dial.

I've found one source for the dial mechanism, but I'm not comfortable ordering from there, and since there is no further guide, I'm reluctant to take that path also. So, I guess it will have to be a Canon fix.

Cheers,

Anthony

Hi Anthony. Did you ever sort this. I've got a mode dial that's damaged, i.e. the button is damaged but works. I need to replace it with the top plate

Thanks
