Icon keeps appearing? Possibly dead battery?

I bought this ipod on ebay for 25 dollars as a back up to my first generation ipod. The seller informed me of this problem. So I got it today, and basically no matter what I do, it is showing an icon with an adapter and a power outlet. I tried plugging it into the mac and the PC. No change. Is this a dead battery? I assuming it isn't the hard drive? If so does this website sell the battery so that I can replace it?

Sarah, just thought of something. Is it possible that this Ipod was attempted to be restored but that did not get finished. The iPod four requires you to be plugged into a different wall outlet. Basically you restore under iTunes and at the end you get a window that says that the iPod must be plugged in to a different power source. Try to plug it into a wall charger if you have not already done so and see what happens. You can not use it on your computer since it is not updated so ur computer as well as itunes will not "see" your iPod. Oh, and no. it is not as difficult as the 3rd gen Ipod but just about. The iPod tools will work just take your time, and don't brake the tools like I do when I work on mine:) good luck and let us know.

Sorry should have been a comment, I apologize.

Oh that's ok. That actually makes more sense, because I was thinking to myself "If it's the battery, why is the icon still coming on?" I don't know what the guy did since I bought it on ebay, but you could be right. Maybe he tried to erase the info off and didn't know what to do next. This ipod would take the regular wall charger that newest ones do, right?

I actually don't own a wall charger because of all the various ipods I have, so I will have to buy one..But I think even the drug store carries them.

You were absolutely right! I bought it a power adapter, and the apple icon came on, then a bar started loading. Than you SO MUCH. I got this ipod for 25 dollars, paid 10 dollars for the adapter, and BAM a working ipod. It was a steal. Thanks again!

Is it even harder than the third generation? That one was kind of hard. Also would it be easier to get the tool? I used to razor blade on my the third generation.

Similar but different 'Dead' Problem after maintenance

I had a real problem with my ipod Classic 60GB that wouldn't restart after I did the tear down, to clean a gummed up click wheel. Basically, despite charging, the ipod wouldn't turn on AT ALL.

At whit's end, and about to throw away, I came across this from the iPhone part of this site. I shorted all three of the iPhone battery terminal by just placing a Stanley knife on them, and lo and behold, it came back to life perfectly.
