Dell Latitude E6420 Black screen of death but external monitor working

My Dell Latitude E6420 has black screen of death. Let me explain what happen. My friend bought a battery for his E6440 laptop and his laptop not starting (no display) he asked me to check on my laptop for that battery.

My laptop display gone after inserting his battery and changed to my battery still didn't worked. I connected external monitor display coming there (external monitor is showing primary). but laptop display not coming to make it secondary.

I did steps.

1. drained power 30-1-2. still didn't work

2. changed RAM slots with another still didn't work

3. tried D+ power, did not see anything.

this morning I observed If close display 70 to 80% I can see barely light on the screen window login in the angle.

Is that means back light gone? What are solutions have now? Do I need to change display? give me suggestion.

I believe I have solved the Dell Latitude black screen of death puzzle that no one has ever effectively answered.

I purchased a used Dell Latitude E6410 laptop which worked perfectly. A few weeks ago I managed to crack the LCD screen by stepping on the laptop. I decided to replace the screen.

My original screen was made for Dell by AU Optronics. This screen worked perfectly with the software and hardware in my Dell Latitude E6410 using Windows 7. The replacement screen I purchased (which was said to be the correct replacement for the E6410) was made by Samsung.

The minute I put the Samsung screen in, the black screen of death problem began occurring and no matter what settings or updates I use, I cannot solve the black screen of death problem.

Dell used both AU Optronics and Samsung screens in the Dell Latitude line. The reason why Dell has never offered an explanation or solution for the black screen , and if they admitted that problem there would be a huge class action suit against Dell.

@Brad Cheng: What a nonsense, you're totally wrong.

#1: You talk about E6410, but even there it's nonsense.

#2: Dell using different OEMs, so far correct, but these parts are interchangeable with eachother. In the case of the display of E6420 it must only be same resolution, technics, connector and measures.

#3: If Dell would use parts from different OEMs which aren't interchangeable, they'd bring avoidable trouble in their warehouses, no company is doing that, they wanna save costs.

Don't miss to disconnect the battery and charger before you change display. Especially batteries are often the reason for sudden death of displays in this matter.

Srikanth Vadlakonda it does sure sounds like your backlight is gone. From what it sounds like the battery somehow shorted out parts on your l;ogic board. It does not sounds like a new LCD would fix this, but anything is possible. It will be easier to exchange the LCD, but somehow I would think that this is a bad LED driver situation. Try a new LCD and see what happens but be prepared that it will not fix this issue. If you can, try to find any identifying marks on your motherboard so we can at least try and find you a schematic to help you out further. Download the service manual from here to help you with the LCD replacement

Questions.

1. Is it easy to change logic board? how should I know it,

2. bad LED driver How to fix this?

Srikanth Vadlakonda you find out about how to change the motherboard in the service manual. The LED driver is an IC on the motherboard. Unless we have the schematic it will be difficult to determie what is going on with the backlight circuitry.

Anyway I am planning to change LCD first. If doesn't fix what you want provide you solve this issue. Do you want me to send pic of motherboard? or what are other ways I can provide in order to you can help me?

Srikanth Vadlakonda try to find any identifying marks on your motherboard and post a couple of good images of your motherboard with your question. for that use this guide Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag

@hyzote: That isn't a driver issue. The dusty connector is a joke, isn't it? The connector is internally and it's connected to the port, so no way for dust to block the connector.

Reinstall your video drivers. This may be your solution but you will want to check all of your drivers to make sure they are updated. If you have recently installed anything then delete that and see if it works. Disconnect your monitor and see if the connection is dusty and ensure that it is securely connected with the cable.
