Here's one more trick you might try:

  • Turn your Samsung Galaxy S4 off and hold Volume Up, Home, and Power keys simultaneously until your smartphone starts to vibrate.
  • Let go of Power key and keep pressing the other two.
  • It will get you into Android System Recovery mode.
  • Press Volume Down to choose wipe cache partition and use Power key to select it.

Alternatively another trick I've used in the past:

  • Connect your device to your computer using a data cable.
  • Go to folder: Computer\SAMSUNG-SGH-I747\Phone\Applidium Image Cache
  • Delete everything in this folder.
  • Go to folder: Computer\SAMSUNG-SGH-I747\Phone\Android\data\com.sec.android.gallery3d\cache
  • Delete everything in this folder.
  • Restart your phone.

If this doesn't work for you above, then I would suspect you could be dealing with a hardware component failure. The first and cheapest troubleshooting step is to replace the camera assembly. If that doesn't work, you could try the motherboard assembly.

Had the same problem with a failed camera message and PC not recognizing USB connection.

Solution - Turn off the phone > Pull the battery > Hold power button for 3 seconds > Reinsert battery > Turn on phone.

Camera works from lock screen, cannot confirm beyond that.
