How do I fix a Nexus 5 Power Button Issue?

When I press the power button once, the phone displays "Turn off Mode." After 10 seconds, the phone restarts and continues until I hold the power button or press it for some time.

Done some research, only way to fix it completely is to replace the power button, the link is to a guide to replace it. I personally went to a repair shop and have them do it for me. Smacking the button does seems to work short-term but you risk further damage to other component.

door

oh thank you this is done and my phone is back to normal.

door

how much the cost for replacement?

door

Same problem but my phone is not switching on. Its showing Google logo then again turning off. Is it just the problem of power button or is it mother not working properly?

door

The power button is getting stuck, whats worked for me on at least 4 occasions of this happening, is taking your nexus 5 and hitting it on a blunt surface (corner would be best or pole) directly on the power button, this should dislodge the power button and fix the issue, has worked for me more than once.

Its a rather simple fix. If you have a case take it off and find a hard surface and smack(use your own discretion if I have to explain the reaction of plastic hitting something hard return to your seat and continue likcking the window) the backside of phone near power button against it several times. Them place your thumb on power button push it in and roll your thumb around four a couple seconds. If it doesn't work repeat. Its basically a result of a poor button choice same reason the buttons rattle right out of the box. Its a temporary fix I have to do once every couple weeks but for the 2 weeks its problem free. At first sign of the problem resurfacing just do it again

Brilliant. My wife laughed out loud when I told her this. She couldn't believe it. I spent hours trying to gently open and manipulate the various contacts.... in the end, smashing it against the desk did the trick. Too funny! Saved me a $100 repair for a crappy button, or a whole motherboard replacement.

door

.... This actually fkn worked. I couldn't get any fastboot or bootloader because it just kept resetting.... Bashed it ont he desk and it fired up. Just got off the phone with google and a new device is on its way. Utter trash, LG.

door

Smacking it against a hard surface alone didn't solve the problem for me, it was actually rolling the button around a bit that solved the issue. Many thanks!

Swear to god.. i thought you were kidding. But this really did work!!! I was sweating as the stupid phone conked off in the last minute and i had a work trip the next day. was

1. Turn off the Device, Unplug it

2. Press power, Volume up & volume down keys together

3. Go to Recovery mode by pressing the Volume down key

4. Select Recovery mode by pressing the power key

5. A small red triangle will appear

6. Holding the power key Tap the volume 'up' key once

7. you will get four options - choose the one to wipe cache partition

8. Wait with patience till you get the message wipe cache completed

9. once you get the wipe cache complete message, you can see 'reboot system now' option above - Select the same and press power key - phone will reboot and should be back to normal now.

If this doesnt work contact the manufacturer (Google)

door

Thank you @ryan.

Seems to have helped for now. Yet, I came across a lot of users complaining about 'Power Button' issues. I suggest try the "Wipe Cache" option first and then check to see if there is a power button (hardware) issue.

door

@Anil Okay good, the wipe cache is just a way to troubleshoot the issue but if its worked it probably resolved the issue

Thanks a ton @Ryan Casey. U r a saviour!

I also have the same issue. LG service center guys told me to replace the mother board. They said it will cost 8.5K INR.

Not sure what to do..

Update

Guys,

I took back my nexus from the LG service center as they asked me to pay 8.5k to replace the motherboard. I was clueless what to do next?

Just read this article - http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/...

Trust me, it worked. I just banged my phone by the right side on a table and the issue with power button fixed. I see my mobile now switched on.

Thanks god, i did not waste my money!

Please try it once before taking to service center. Remember, please dont hit so hard.

share your joy if it works

Initially, 2 months back i guess my phone started to reboot again and again. Then i watched one video on youtube, where it was asked to press the power button after start again n again. That helped. But now the phone is not even starting up.Service center people said that the power key has shorten up, and as they cant change the part you have to spend 8k for it, which is just ridiculous.

door

I saw a solution where a person outside India, purchased a power button from ebay and get it changed. But for India its not available and power button costs just 7 to 8$.

Step 1. Watch video here until 3:38 to take phone apart: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ego0eXYwOms

Step 2. @ 3:38 this person has their finger on the power button.

Step 3. Clean the button with "electrical contact cleaner" do not "soak" it, just thoroughly clean it by spraying from both sides and pushing the button repeatedly. Use rubber gloves.

Step 4. Put back together and marvel in the fact that it actually worked...

Step 5. Disclaimer: I do not take any responsibility for self caused damage to your device if you choose to use this method. You do so at your own risk and will not be held liable.

Step 6. Beer. And remember, usually 2 things kill electronics. Heat and dirt. Or idiots.....

If you are in Bangalore and near Marathahalli area, you can pick the phone to LG service center which is in the alley next to golkunda chimney hotel. It looks like many are using the service from this center. Just 15 min, you can replace the power button on the mother board .

Mr Manohar is well knowledgeable in this issue and he does it with ease . You can actually see what is he doing from the service window. No bull $@$* talk on replacing the motherboard unlike other service center.

I was able to do it in Just 15 min for Rs370 with invoice copy from LG center.

P.S: If you try their number shown online, you will be disappointed that no one is picking your call. All you have to do is visit their shop by opening time 10 AM and you can finish your task in 15 - 30 min depending on the Queue there. Not much Queue when i went there. I was able to come out in 15 min time finishing the payment. the shop opens from 10 AM till 6 PM. Mon till Sat.

I had the same problem, once I tap the power button my phone restarted again and again. I found the following self discovered method the most easiest and riskless one:

Just tap the power button repeatedly while the OS is in reboot mode and carry on tapping the button until your OS is ready. OS may restart again or it may not. You might not be successful in one or two attempts. The phone might restart again and again. Continue doing so until your phone restart problem is resolved.

Important note: The frequency of tapping of power button should be fast. It must be tapped quickly or this method will not work.

This happened to me and I installed gravity screen as a workaround, which worked fine. However, I had a software issue that locked my phone so I had to factory reset and the problem went away when I did that. It has been a few weeks and it works fine now! Mine was definitely software related, not hardware. Hope this helps!

When i took my Nexus 5 apart, it looked like the back of the power button was bowing out a little. I used a needle nose pliers to squeeze the button back into shape. It's been a week now and is still working fine. Be careful, it is easy to over do it.

Thank you @Rohith Kumar. Nope. That is a software issue. I uninstalled a couple of apps and tried and it is working fine. If it is a hardware issue that should have given out other indications. Here uninstalling a few apps helped me. Thanks for pointing it way. :-)

I had the same problem. Nothing really helped until I simply removed the button from the board with a soldering iron.

Removing the button is pretty easy, follow any tutorial to reach the power button on the board, then heat up the area and gently pull the button out. Watch out not to overheat the close by components as you might damage them.

Replacing the button is possible, but these buttons are TINY You need a good (hot) soldering iron, flux, and preferably low-temp solder for removing the button properly (And/or a hot-air supply of some sort, if you have one). So this is a bit beyond basic soldering skills.

Anyway, when I removed the button on my phone one of the soldering pads came out with it, so I just left the phone without a button.

You can reboot the phone without the power button using fastboot by:

1. Pressing volume-down when connecting the micro-USB to the computer

2. Using the fastboot.exe tool from the Android SDK ('fastboot.exe reboot')

Then install an app like "Volume Power" which unlocks the Nexus when you press the volume buttons.

Good luck!

I had this problem I changed the button and now no longer have this problem. Any other fix is a temperary fix. Unfortunately it's a difficult fix if you don't have the right equipment. For those that do add additional standard solder to the solder joints and then use two soldering irons to heat up all the switch solder points at the same time and remove the faulty button. Add more standard solder to the switch pads to lower the melting point and then remove with solder wick. Use amicro scope and fine tip soldering iron to solder the new switch in place. I would avoid using hot air as its very easy to over heat and damage these switches.

My Nexus5 was doing the same thing. Turns out the connector from the Battery (the little Copper piece that sticks of the top of the battery) wasn't seated correctly into the phone. It needs to snap into the connector.

If you phone only flashes the battery symbol when it is plugged in, I believe that means it is getting power, but doesn't find a battery in the device. I removed the battery, and plugged the phone into my charger, and I got the same battery symbol flashing, and Android would just keep rebooting.

I've had this problem on and off, and the hitting off a table works sometimes. However, I found the most successful method to be to take out the sim tray and blow directly into the gap in the phone. Fixed it for me!

Even I faced the same problem. I took the phone to LG service centre in Mumbai and as expected it had power button malfunctioning. There is a tiny button on the motherboard which needs to be replaced. It involves desoldering and soldering job so it is slightly specialized one. They charged me Rs.381/= and was told that bill will be coming to my email ID, and I am expecting the same anytime. Let me share one more experience for the benefit of all. If you take to some LG service centers, they may tell you that motherboard is needed to be replaced and will involve an expense of a tune of Rs. 10000/=. My sincere advice is that in that case try some other LG service center and insist on replacing the power button. This has happened to me that is why I thought I should share with all. Good Luck and Enjoy!!

guys. they have an intermittent short in the power button. never "Smack your phone" Phones are very sensitive devices and a technician worth half their salt will not suggest this. it may Temporarily dislodge the intermittant short, but it will cause issues in the long run.

Simply put, the mechanics of the power button are loose. you should replace this button. my store does it regularily. it is a surface mounted component, that needs to be soldered. the part is below.

Please dont hit your phone. this suggestion hurts my brain

This IS THE SOLUTION:

I tried cleaning the power button and it was a temporary fix. Every couple of months it kept happening and worse each time. Finally, it wouldn't work at all so I did one last thing before giving up and buying a new phone AND IT WORKED!!! I simply opened up the phone, took a pair of tweezers and litterally ripped out the power button. Since then, I had been keeping my phone charged at 100% just in case I could never turn it off again but today it locked up on me and...wait for it...I inserted a piece of metal into the hole where the power button used to be and it made the connection. Yay! I have my phone back with no power button issues! I just stick the end of a pair of metal scissors in to turn it on and off.

I can provide a pic if this interests anyone. I'm super stoked that I have my Nexus 5 back functioning perfectly. Love this phone!
