How come iPhone needs usb cable in connector to function properly?

My iPhone 4 was taking a lot of time to charge and randomly shut down even when the battery supposedly was charged (high battery percentage in statusbar). I decided to replace the battery and uneventfully did that. For a couple of weeks the iPhone worked fine. After that the iPhone randomly began to shut down again, at first now and then, but later immediately after taking the Apple adapter cord out. So now the iPhone is constantly connected to a power outlet and can no longer be called a mobile device.

But....just today I found out that the iPhone also stays on when I unplug the cord from the power outlet as long as I keep the other end connected to the dock connector. Which means it is mobile again, but not really functional. I was wondering if this means the problem is caused by the dock connector and not the new battery. Or maybe something else, so I can try to fix it. Any suggestion would be highly appreciated!

JackyX, if you have to keep it plugged at the dock connector end to prevent it from turning off, I would suggest to replace the dock connector. Sounds like it is shortening out somewhere on the contacts. Check for broken, bend or corroded pins. This guide will help you in getting it accomplished. hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for your advice. I am ordering a dock connector at this very moment (multitasking) and will let you know if replacing it helped.

Hi oldturkey03. I finally found the time to replace the dock connector. It does not seem to have solved the problem. It stays on every now and then without being connected to the USB cable. Charging is very slow. Maybe I have to check the logic board. I saw one rusty screw near the volume down button (one of the three broad screws on the long side). The water damage indicators were white, though. If you have any suggestions, feel free to type them.
