I had an ipod touch 4th gen - did an lcd replacement and rear cam didnt work.  Same issue, just froze up when cam app opened.  Took apart ipod again and when i got to the rear cam i saw that it was not completely connected.  Snapped a new one in place with the power OFF.  Put back together and all was well.  I dont know if the old cam would have worked and dont really care - its fixed.  Hope this helps someone.
