Because you replaced the HDD, it's not formatted and needs to be formatted in iTunes in Disk Mode
Turn the iPod on and press the center button and menu button to reset it
Then press and hold the center and menu button to reset it, then press the center button and play/pause button and plug in your cable, it will be in recovery mode, and press restore
Start there and tell us what happens

If none of this helps, I'd suggest running diagnostic mode, this is done by pressing the center button and menu button, and as soon as the screen goes black, press the center button and back button, you want to run the memory test(it's called that on my Nano, should be the same on the Classic) and see what this does, tell us exactly what it says so we can help further, and if it passes, reseat the cables in it
