Have you considered that  the issue could be caused by a bad optical drive cable?

As you said it could also be a logicboard issue but it might be worth trying a different cable

I don’t think it would be a compatibility issue as optical disk drives are like hard drives ,they all use SATA the they are all basically interchangeable
