My friends phone was just doing that. I opened the slider and pressed a hotkey to the address book then I hit end call button to cancel out, after that I was able to press menu and get into the phone options to recalibrate the touch screen.

I think the problem is that the phone thinks its open, which changes the coordinates for horizontal use. You just have to trick it back into normal mode. It shouldn't be too hard.
