4wd not engaging in my 4runner

Hi there.... I have just brought a 1990 hilux 4runner 2.4td

Stupid me assumed 4wd worked when really the gears were just changing. Nothing was coming up on the dash but I have just plugged a lead in right at the front underneath and now the 4wd light is on all the time but it's not actually engaging.. any ideas ?
