Sleep button hinge bracket trouble

I was trying to take the old sleep button off the hinge bracket to put the new one one but the little metal plate won't come off. How do you take it off to put the new sleep button on the hinge bracket?

It seems that the new sleep button already has the plate on it but there is no adhesive on the back. Am I doing something wrong?
