Samsung Galaxy Prevail 2 Troubleshooting
It is a 3.4 oz., white Android phone with a 4” touchscreen and a 5MP camera. It was released in 2013 on the Boost Mobile network. Recognized with model number SPH-M840.
Phone Will Not Charge
Plugged phone into an outlet, and phone will not charge.
Although this is simple, it could be your problem. Make sure that the charger port fits the cable's end easily without force. If not, you may be using the wrong charger. For this phone, specifically, the charger required is micro USB.
Charging Cable Is Damaged
The wiring in your charger cable could be damaged and you may not visually be able to see it. To check this you can try a different cable in the same outlet. You can also try using the cable in your computer rather than an outlet. If the phone still does not charge in the computer, your cable may be damaged, and needs to be replaced.
Outlet Has No Power
It could simply be that there is no power coming out of the outlet. To check this problem, try plugging in another device into the same outlet. If it still does not work, see if if there is a nearby switch that powers the specific outlet. If there is not, the outlet may have no power and you should try another outlet of which you are sure has power.
It is possible that your phone battery is just dead and can no longer charge. Take battery out of the phone, and observe if the battery looks swollen ("literally"). If it is, it definitely needs to be replaced. Replace the battery using this guide.
Touch Screen Is Unresponsive
Phone is on, but does not respond to your finger movements, or clicks on the screen.
Phone Needs To Be Restarted
Try restarting your Samsung Galaxy Prevail 2 by holding down the power button until it turns off. Wait at least 10 seconds before turning the phone back on again. If the problem persists, you may need to remove the battery and restart the phone again. Follow the battery replacement guide to do this.
Too Many Applications Opened
If your phone eventually unfreezes on its own, you should close all of your running applications. It is likely that the phone froze because it was running too many applications simultaneously. You should make it a habit to completely close apps if you are not using them.
If you have recently downloaded an app to your phone, is is possible that it is corrupting the cache. In order to verify this, you should clear the cache starting by powering off your phone. After your phone is completely off, turn it back on. When the Samsung logo appears on the screen, hold down the “Volume Down” key. You can release the button once “Safe mode” appears in the lower left corner of the screen. If the screen now works, you should probably delete any recently downloaded apps to ensure that the problem does not happen again. One the apps are deleted, restart the phone once more.
Phone Needs A Factory Reset
If the problem still persists after completed the above steps, your last resort is to complete factory reset on your phone. Before completing this, ensure that you have saved any data you want to keep from this phone on an SD card or other device. Complete the reset using the steps below:
- Ensure that the phone is off. (Remove battery and then put it back in a few seconds later.)
- Press and hold the “Volume Up”, and “Power” buttons simultaneously.
- When the “Android System Recovery” screen comes up, you can release the buttons.
- Using the volume down button, highlight “Wipe Data/ Factory Reset” and press the power button to select this option.
- Use volume down and power buttons again to select “Yes -- delete all user data” from the options.
- Once the menu re-appears, use the volume and power buttons again to select “Reboot system now”.
Once your phone powers up, your screen should be unfrozen. If not, the device may be permanently damaged, and need to be replaced. You should contact your local store to be sure.
Memory Card is Full
Phone displays low memory error message.
Space Needs To Be Cleared
If your memory card is full, it is likely that you are experiencing the following problems:
- Your phone is running slowly or freezing.
- You are unable to install applications, save music or photos.
- Your phone displays a low memory message.
You may find that there are a lot of unnecessary photos, or unused apps downloaded on your phone. To avoid the problems above, you should delete any apps that you no longer use, or photos that have no meaning to you. This will then free some memory and storage space on your phone and should remove the error message and reduce the problems.
Cache Needs To Be Cleared
Follow the steps under "Corrupted Cache" above.
Larger Memory Capacity Needed
If you complete the options above and the error message is still displayed. It is likely that you will need to purchase and install an SD card that has a larger storage capacity than the one you are currently using. This can be purchased at your local store. Camera Does Not Work
You receive an error message that says “cannot connect to camera” or camera does not function when trying to take photos.
Phone Needs To Be Restarted
Sometimes apps, or your cell phone activity can trigger different hardware malfunctions without you knowing the specific cause. Before taking any grand measures, you should simply try restarting your phone by holding down the power button. It would be best to take the battery out, and wait at least one minute before re-inserting the battery and turning on the phone.
SD Card Malfunction
If there is a problem with the SD card of which your photos are saved, it is likely that it has affected your camera usage. To test this, remove your SD card from the phone, and restart it. Once the phone is back on, test the camera. If it works then you may need to replace your SD Card using this guide.
Camera Apps Need To Be Deleted
If you have recently downloaded any camera apps that require access to your camera, this could be your problem. This would include, torch light or camera effect apps. These apps sometimes cause the camera to malfunction. Try deleting these apps and then testing the camera again.
Phone Needs a Factory Reset
Follow the factory reset instructions under “Touch Screen” troubleshooting.
There could be an internal hardware problem with the camera that is not simply fixed. If the above options do not work, it is likely that your camera needs to be replaced. Learn how using this guide.
No Sound Coming From Phone
There is no audio coming from speakers.
Phone Needs To Be Off Vibrate/Mute
You could have possibly forgotten to unmute the mobile device, or take it off of vibrate. Go to Apps->Settings->Sound->Volume and assure that all levels are scrolled to the highest for audible sound.
Empty Headset Jack
Sometimes when headphones/accessories are plugged into the headphone jack, it prevents any sound from coming out of speakers in phone. Make sure there is nothing plugged into the headset jack for sound to pour out.
The phone could have a hardware/software malfunction at the moment --whether, the phone freezes, too many applications running, etc-- that prevents any other phone tasks to occur, including no sound coming out. So it would be best to restart the phone and see if the speakers produce audio now.
It could be that there is a problem with the manufacturer hardware. If nothing else “prevails”, then you will have to replace your speaker.
