Application(s) running slow
A considerable performance hit with running your applications on the HP G62-234DX is a common problem that can be fixed with some solutions outlined below.
Too Many Applications Running
One of the more common causes of application(s) running slow is due to too many applications or having too many tabs open at once. This is because your HP’s CPU, computing power, is running at a high rate. To check this, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete at the same time and open the task manager. This will show what applications are making your HP work the hardest. Once you see which applications are using the most RAM/power, close out the applications and allow your computer to rest and cool down. When the ram is full/high it has less memory and therefore takes more time to process.
Hard Reset
If you run into screen freeze or considerable slow down when booting up your computer. Another possible problem that can be fixed (software) related is by doing a hard reset of your computer to flush out any corrupted or faulty processes within the computer itself. This will work most of the time since it restores the system.
Outdated Drivers
Another problem with the computer could be that your drivers are outdated. If you experience system freezes or noticeable lag it is a good idea to update your drivers. By updating your drivers it makes sure the system is running smoothly and can interact with all of your applications. To find out if your drivers are to update, check your windows updates in settings. You should also check your other drivers and download them from your components official website and download the newest drivers if they are out of date.
Too Many Startup Programs
These are the programs that will automatically load when you boot up your computer if the computer lags. There are too many startup programs at one time so the computer has to slow down in order to complete all of the startup instructions. In order to improve performance and reduce lag you will need to remove non-essential startup programs. To do this you will need to go to Task Manager -> Startup -> Disable.
Outdated Hard Drive
If you are close to the end of available memory that can cause some lag between applications since they are all stored on the hard drive, another problem is that hard drives, just like anything, erodes and need to be replaced after a certain number of years (recommended 3-5). By replacing the hard drive you can increase the speed as it has brand new components and or more memory.
RAM is Out of Date
RAM or (Random Access Memory) is where most of your search tabs will be if the ram is slow or is out of date it will lag, in order to avoid this you need to replace and or upgrade RAM in order to reduce lag and delay within your search tabs.
Device Overheating
If you are feeling your HP starts to run slow and feel extremely hot, it is most likely overheating. This excessive heating can usually come from and be solved with some simple fixes and cleanings of the HP G62-234DX.
Too many applications running
One of the most common causes of the HP overheating is running too many applications or having too many tabs open at once. This is because your HP’s CPU power is running at a high rate. To check this, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete at the same time and open the task manager. This will show what applications are making your HP work the hardest. Once you see which applications are using the most RAM/power, close out the applications and allow your computer to rest and cool down.
Dust buildup in the vents
Another common cause of the HP G62-234DX overheating is buildup of dust in the air vents which is blocking the flow of air that cools the battery and motherboard. In order to fix this, you need to take the back of the computer off in order to access the vents to clean them. You may use a dust blower, detailing brush, damp cloth or a cleaning wipe to clean the vents.
Blue screen of Death
The infamous “blue screen of death” is a very common pop up with all sorts of electronics. This means that your operating system, ex. Windows, within the computer's hardware, has been erased or compromised. For your HP, here are a few common answers to the cause of the blue screen of death.
Hard Drive Failure
In most cases, the HP’s hard drive suddenly erases the operating system due to constantly not loading up the HP correctly or having incorrect restarts of the system. The Hard drive is the hardware part that holds onto the memory/storage of the entire system. This will entail that you may need to either replace your hard drive or reinstall the operating system using a company flash drive to install it. If your local electronics store does not have the hard drive you need, please visit the HP website or call customer service to acquire one.
Motherboard Malfunction
In a similar way, the motherboard could also be the point of contact that is wrong with the device. Similar to the hard drive, the motherboard is the main controller of the entire HP which can be specific to certain models. If the motherboard is malfunctioning, it could mean that something is disconnected or just entirely burnt out. In this case, we recommend replacing the motherboard entirely to avoid any other possible issues that may remain in the current motherboard inside the HP. If you do not have access to a motherboard, please contact the customer service of HP to order one.
Device Does Not Turn On
If your laptop is not turning on and showing no signs of trying to turn on there are multiple causes that can contribute to the problem. There can be simple fixes like the battery being drained, and the screen not working. Then there can be more serious problems like physical damage to the device that would require more troubleshooting to diagnose and fix the problem.
Battery Failure
The easiest solution to your HP G62-234DX not turning on is a drained or dead battery/power supply. Before going further with any troubleshooting it is important to make sure your using the correct charger for your device, and it is plugged into a working outlet. After making sure you are using the correct working charger it is likely that either the charging port on the device has been damaged, or the battery for the device is damaged and needs to be replaced.
CMOS Battery Failure
One other possible solution to test out is to replace the CMOS battery which stores the BIOS settings in the motherboard. This is especially true if you're running an older laptop that is off a lot or used with the main battery removed. A new CMOS battery is very budget-friendly to replace.
Screen/LCD Failure
If your power supply is working, you will need to troubleshoot further.
- First, disconnect all of your nonessential external display devices like projectors and monitors to make sure they’re not interfering with the startup processes of your laptop.
- If the power button is lit and you can hear fans or noises but there isn’t an image being displayed, turn out the lights to see if there’s an image being displayed very faintly.
- If there is a very faint image once the lights are off, the screen’s inverter has failed and you’ll need to replace it.
- Alternatively, your brightness button may be broken.
If your laptop starts up but there isn’t an image, the LCD panel could be broken and needs to be replaced.
Motherboard Failure
The last step when diagnosing power issues is to check your hardware. If you’ve recently installed hardware like a new RAM kit, that could be the cause of your boot issues. Remove and reinstall your new hardware and try to boot again.
Unfortunately, sometimes the hardware in your laptop such as your hard drive simply fails and there is no easy fix. If you hear a clicking noise or the drive spinning but then powering down, this is a telltale sign your hard drive has failed. In most cases, this means you’ll need to simply replace your hard drive. If the hard drive works in another device, the motherboard, which causes everything to work together may have failed and will need to be replaced.
Short Battery Life
If your battery life starts to diminish and you can tell there is a lot less time between charges, the mostly likely explanation is that the battery is losing its charge faster due to constant use and it has diminished. This can be a simple fix where you can either replace the battery for a new one or follow these simple solutions which can increase battery life but you will eventually need a new battery for your HP G62-234DX
Screen Brightness Is on High
A very easy solution to increase your battery life is to turn down the brightness, having a bright screen uses more power and therefore more battery life. By reducing your brightness you are using less power and increasing battery life.
Power Save Mode On
If you would prefer not to change your brightness the power save mode on your laptop is also a solid solution to increase battery life. The power save mode temporarily turns off a lot of things that use excessive and in most cases unnecessary amounts of power such as automatic email, live syncing and background apps that you aren’t using in order to maximize battery life.
Unnecessary Peripherals Attached to Computer.
By having Bluetooth or other peripherals connected to your computer it is constantly scanning the port to see if there is a device connected by turning off Bluetooth and disconnecting unwanted peripherals the computer no longer needs to scan these ports which reduces the power and increases battery life.
Battery is at the End of its Life
If the battery has gone through a certain amount of charge cycles or you've had the laptop for a long time without replacing the battery, it may be time to replace it.
Black Screen
Your screen does not light up when you press the power button.
Brightness is Too Low
If the brightness on your computer is too low, then the screen would appear black. Try using the key command Fn+F3 to increase the brightness. You can also go into the Windows settings and adjust the brightness there.
Laptop Needs to be Charged
Laptops in power saving mode will dim the brightness by default in order to save the battery. Power saving mode typically occurs when your laptop battery is at 20% or lower. Charging your laptop to a moderate battery level will disable power saving mode, which would increase your brightness. Also providing a continuous power source to your laptop will prevent the use of power saving mode and would not cause your screen to dim.
Screen Needs to be Replaced
If your screen is still black after adjusting your brightness and charging your laptop, replacing your screen might be the only option.
Screen replacement might also be necessary if the screen is visibly damaged (broken pieces, cracks, vertical or horizontal lines of various colors), has stuck or dead pixels, or does not function properly, especially if you noticed these issues before your screen went completely black. Stuck pixels will be a spot on your screen stuck on one color, while dead pixels are black spots on your screen.
Laptop is Very Noisy
Your laptop is very loud when it is running. This sound is most likely an issue with the fans on the bottom of the laptop.
Dusty Fans
Dust buildup within the fans can contribute to friction on the fan blades, making them sound significantly louder. Cleaning your fans requires removing the back and wiping it down with a cloth. Learn how to clean your laptop's fans and reduce dust buildup.
Running Many Tasks/High Performance Tasks
When your laptop is under a high performance load it can cause the laptop to get extremely hot, which would make the fans run faster and louder in order to provide enough cooling. Close unnecessary applications and reduce the amount of high performance tasks you have open at once in order to allow your computer to cool down.
Fan Needs to be Replaced
Certain noises such as scraping, grinding, and even clicking may indicate a broken fan. If the fan itself is broken, replacing it is the best option. If you have a fixed fan, the only sounds that should be audible is the air flow from the bottom of the laptop, or possibly the motor of the fans if too many applications are running.
Wi-Fi is Slow
Your Wi-Fi connection is slow and online access is constantly buffering.
Wi-Fi is Out
If the WiFi network itself is not active or if it is under stress, then that would cause a slow connection. Pressing the Fn + F12 keys together activates airplane mode, which will disable wireless connections to the device if pressed accidentally. Ensure that airplane mode is off, and that you are connected to a network. Otherwise you will just have to wait for the connection to stabilize.
Adapter Settings are Unoptimized
Wireless adapter settings might hinder your laptop's ability to properly connect to wireless networks. Optimizing your settings such as transmit power could improve your internet connection. Tweaking the transmit power of your wireless adapter allows it to use more power to search a wider range for WiFi networks.
VPN Could be Enabled
Certain VPNs can actually cause your WiFi to slow down drastically. A VPN encrypts and decrypts data to protect your internet activity. VPN usage might cause significant slowdowns in your laptop's internet speed due to encryption processes or server distances. Turning off your VPN will increase your connection speed.
Wi-Fi Card Needs to be Replaced
An old or outdated Wi-Fi card might not allow you to connect to certain networks. These older cards also might not be as fast as the newer cards, so your connection would be slower. Go here to learn how to replace the Wi-Fi card.
Keyboard is Not Responding
Nothing happens when you are clicking keys on the keyboard.
Keyboard Locks might Be Enabled/Disabled
Certain keyboard locks might be accidentally enabled or disabled, causing unusual behavior while typing or the inability to type at all. Explore how to check and manage keyboard lock settings to check proper functionality of keys.
Keyboard Needs to be Replaced
Every key on a keyboard has a limited amount of keystrokes. Over time these keys will reach the end of their lifespan and will eventually need to be replaced. Laptop keyboards have a membrane layer under them, which needs to be kept dry at all times. Any amount of liquid that could seep into this membrane can cause permanent damage. If either problem occurs, then replacing the entire keyboard is the clear solution.
Trackpad Not Responding
Nothing happens when you are interacting with the trackpad.
Trackpad Could be Disabled
A potential issue for the trackpad not working is that the device itself is actually disabled. To fix this problem you will need an external mouse that is able to plug into a USB port on the laptop. Once you have this external mouse navigate to device manager -> Human Interface Devices -> Trackpad. Once you have found the trackpad in the device manager right click on it and press enable.
Trackpad Might be Delayed due to a Slow computer
Trackpad inputs can be delayed from your computer slowing down. Multiple processes running at the same time can cause a stutter in the detected input from your trackpad. Closing unwanted processes, and even restarting your computer can help to alleviate the delay of your trackpad. The trackpad could also be close to dying or breaking, so replacing it would be helpful (see trackpad replacement guide).
Trackpad Needs to be Replaced
A dead trackpad would be unresponsive to any input and therefore would not display a cursor on the screen. Dead trackpads can be caused by impacts or just extremely extended use over time. Certain damage to the trackpad can be comparable to the keyboard such as spills, which would also cause a decrease in overall function of the trackpad. If there is a visible discrepancy with the trackpad (visible cracks, scratches, and missing keys) or if none of the previous solutions fixed the problem, then the trackpad itself may need to be replaced.
Webcam Not Displaying Anything
Nothing displays when the webcam is turned on.
Webcam is Covered
If your laptop is new, there may be a sticker covering your camera that was placed there to protect it during packaging. Removing this sticker will allow visibility through the camera. Some laptops also come with webcam covers built into them. These webcam covers will typically have a release or slide latch, which will allow you to open the cover.
Webcam is Not Being Detected Properly
If other applications are using the Webcam or if the Webcam is active, but it does not show up when you select it, then it is not properly being detected. In order for your computer to detect your webcam, the webcam must be turned on (a red light being on) and enabled as an active device. To check if your webcam is enabled, open the device manager, and navigate to the cameras section. Once you are in the cameras section, find your webcam and right click on it, then press enable. If you only see the prompt to disable the webcam, then it is already enabled. Potential causes for your webcam not being detected is that a background process is using the webcam at the same time as another one. Understanding which applications you have open can assist you in knowing whether or not your webcam is being detected.
Webcam Needs to be Replaced
If the webcam is visibly broken, meaning there are cracks, then there may be visibility issues. Another problem could be liquids getting into the webcam which could cause some damage to the internal parts, rendering the camera useless. A loose cable can prevent power from getting to the webcam, which would cause it to cease function. If any of these problems occur, a webcam replacement should be the best solution.
