== First Steps ==

There are some simple checks that you can start with to point you in the right direction, and can save you hours.

* ***Does your vacuum have a hard floor setting that shuts off the brush rolls?***  If so make sure it isn't turned on. If it is, turn it off and see if your brush rolls work.

** The motor may have an overload reset button. Unplug your vacuum then:

== The Drive Belt Is Broken ==

This is the most common problem that you will encounter after going through the items above.  It isn't hard in most cases to check.   If it's broken, you need to replace it, but the key is to work out why it broke.  Unplug your vacuum before you start these checks.

* ***Does the belt show signs of being stuck?***
** The belt may have an area where it looks ground away or kind of melted, mainly in one place.
** If the brush roll is jammed for a time the spinning drive shaft can create enough heat to melt and abrade the belt. The belt will break easily at that point.
** Debris wrapped around the brush roll can jam it; make sure you clean the brush roll before reinstalling it.  Make sure the bearings are also cleaned out and that the roll spins.  If you can't get it to spin smoothly, you will have to replace the brush roll along with the belt.
* ***Does the belt show signs of slipping?***
** Instead of just stopping or jamming, the brush roll may be hard to turn.
** The belt moves then, but the drive shaft moves faster so it slips and it wears the belt along its whole length. Then it breaks.
** The brush roll or its bearings may be clogged with hair, threads or dirt. Make sure they are clean and the roll spins.
** The belt may also have slipped because it was loose.  Check the fit of the new belt when it is installed. Make sure it is the right one for your model.
* ***Is the brush roll installed properly?***
** Sometimes the roll can fit properly only one way, but that won't be apparent until you run the unit.
** It can rub against another part when everything is back in place.
** Check carefully that the brush roll spins freely when reinstalled, and that it isn't touching any parts of the housing.
* ***Is the belt just old?***  Belts see a fair amount of wear and time can just catch up to them.

== The Drive Belt Fell Off ==

Is the brush roll clean now? Did the belt slip off rather than break?  This points to alignment or tension problems, or both.

* Replace the belt.
** Old belts can stretch and when stretched are much more prone to falling off. For most vacuums this IS the tension adjustment.
** The belt may be glazed and will slip and heat enough that it expands and falls off.
* Check to see that the brush roll is installed correctly and is not cocked or improperly seated. If it isn't in properly it can be at a slight angle to the driveshaft and may cause the belt to wander and fall off.
* Some upright vacuums have the motor parallel to the brush rolls, but its part of the upper body of the vacuum. If there is a lot of play in the assembly from wear the shaft can go out of alignment with the brush roll and the belt will fall off.

== The Drive Belt Slips ==

Sometimes the drive belt is still connected, and the brush roll may still turn a bit as long as it isn't touching anything.  It stops very readily though, and won't turn when vacuuming.

* First step: ***replace the belt***; it could be just stretched.
* Check to see that the brush roll is rotating in the right direction.
** This can easily happen with some uprights that use a belt with a twist, the brush roll will be sweeping things away from the inlet!
** The belt can slip and the roll may stall.

** Worn bearings can cause a loss of tension such that the belts that once fit won't do so any longer. The brush roll bearings are the usual ones that fail.
** Plastic vacuum housings can soften from overheating and allow the motor to shift, loosening the belt.
*** You can try shimming the motor back in place, then try reinstalling the belt.
*** Or depending on the cost, a new housing might be an easier fix.

== Eerste stappen ==

Er is een aantal simpele stappen dat je kunt ondernemen zonder te weten wat er aan de hand is en die je uren kan besparen:

* ***Heeft je stofzuiger een instelling voor harde vloeren waarbij de borstel wordt uitgeschakeld?*** Als dat zo is, moet je zeker stellen dat deze instelling niet geactiveerd is. Als de instelling wel geactiveerd is, zet je deze uit en kijk je of de borstel daarna wel werkt. 
* ***Staat je stofzuiger op de juiste hoogte-instelling voor het tapijt dat je hebt?*** Controleer de hoogte-instelling van je stofzuiger en zorg dat deze, bijvoorbeeld, niet erg laag is ingesteld terwijl je een hoog tapijt hebt. Dit kan er namelijk voor zorgen dat de borstel het niet aankan en dus stopt met draaien. 
* ***Zit de borstel vol met haar, touwtjes of ander vuil?*** Dit kan de borstel ervan weerhouden te draaien, omdat deze vastloopt op al het vuil dat erin vast is komen te zitten. Het is ook mogelijk dat de riem hierdoor slipt, ervan afloopt of zelfs breekt. 
** Haal de stekker van de stofzuiger uit het stopcontact en maak de borstel volledig schoon. Het is mogelijk dat je de stofzuiger hiervoor deels moet demonteren.

** Test de stofzuiger nadat je al deze stappen hebt genomen om te zien of de borstel nu wel in staat is te draaien.

** Centrale stofzuigers, zakloze stofzuigers en sommige steeltofzuigers met een motoraangedreven borstel bevatten draden of een snoer aan de binnenkant die door de slang of steel naar de borstelkop loopt. Controleer of de motor nog steeds loopt of dat deze gestopt is. Als je de motor niet hoort draaien:
*** Controleer je of het snoer losgekomen is. Als dat zo is, probeer je deze weer aan te sluiten. 
*** Controleer je of de aansluitingen vuil of verbogen zijn. Maak ze, indien nodig, schoon en buig ze terug. 
** Het is mogelijk dat de motor een ''overload reset''-knop heeft. Haal de stekker uit het stopcontact en controleer de volgende dingen:
*** Kijk of de de knop is geactiveerd. Indien dat zo is, laat je de motor afkoelen en reset je de stofzuiger. 
*** Bepaal wat ervoor zorgt dat de borstel niet goed of moeilijk draait. 
*** Het is mogelijk dat een ophoping van haar, touwtjes of rubberen elastiekjes in de borstel vast is komen te zitten. Maak de borstel als dit het geval is schoon. 
* ***Ligt je tapijt los of komen er stukken tapijt in de stofzuiger terecht?*** Het is mogelijk dat je stofzuiger delen van het tapijt opzuigt, die weer vast komen te zitten in de stofzuiger. Controleer of het tapijt goed is bevestigd en of er stukken uit zijn.

Als de borstels nog steeds niet willen draaien, ga je verder met de volgende stap. Als je stofzuiger geen aandrijfriem heeft, zoals bij door lucht gedreven stofzuigers, kun je alle stappen met betrekking op een aandrijfriem overslaan en direct verdergaan met [[Vacuum Brushes Not Spinning#Section_Air_Turbine_Issues|de problemen met betrekking tot de luchtstroom|new_window=true]].

== De aandrijfriem is gebroken ==

Dit is het meest voorkomende probleem dat je tegen zult komen als de bovenstaande stappen het probleem niet hebben verhelpen. Het is in de meeste gevallen ook niet lastig te controleren of dit het geval is. Als de aandrijfriem gebroken is, zul je deze moeten vervangen. Toch is het meest belangrijke hierbij dat je erachter komt waarom de riem gebroken is. Trek de stekker van je stofzuiger uit het stopcontact voordat je met de volgende stappen aan de slag gaat.

* ***Zit de aandrijfriem vast?*** 
** Het is mogelijk dat een deel van de riem zo ver is weggesleten of zelfs gesmolten is dat het telkens op deze plek doorslipt. 
** Als de borstel vastzit is de borstelaandrijving in staat zo veel warmte te genereren dat een deel van de riem wegsmelt. Als de riem beschadigd is, is de kans aanzienlijk veel groter dat de riem breekt. 
** Vuil dat rondom de borstel vast is komen te zitten, kan ertoe leiden dat de borstel vastloopt. Zorg dat je de borstel volledig schoonmaakt voordat je deze weer terugplaatst. Zorg dat ook de lagers schoongemaakt zijn en dat je zeker weet dat de borstel weer kan draaien. Als het je niet lukt de borstel draaiende te krijgen, zul je de borstel samen met de riem moeten vervangen. 
* ***Zijn er tekenen die erop duiden dat de riem slipt?*** 
** In plaats van volledig vast te zitten, is het ook mogelijk dat de borstel lastig te draaien is. 
** Als de riem bijvoorbeeld wel draait, maar de aandrijving zo krachtig is dat de riem doorslipt, is het mogelijk dat de riem beschadigd raakt en de borstel niet draait. Tot slot zal de riem een keer breken. 
** Het is mogelijk dat de borstel of de lagers volzitten met haar en ander vuil. Zorg in dat geval dat alles schoongemaakt wordt en dat de borstel weer in staat is te draaien. 
** Het is ook mogelijk dat de riem los zit, waardoor de riem doorslipt. Controleer of de aandrijfriem op spanning staat en plaats indien nodig een nieuwe riem. Zorg dat het de juiste riem is voor je model stofzuiger. 
* ***Is de borstelrol op de juiste manier geïnstalleerd?*** 
** Soms is de borstel maar via een kant te plaatsen, maar merk je dit niet tot de borstel daadwerkelijk draait.
** Het is mogelijk dat de borstel tegen een ander onderdeel aan schuurt, waardoor deze niet draait zoals het hoort. 
** Controleer of de borstel, nadat je deze weer hebt teruggeplaatst, vrij kan draaien en niets raakt. 
* ***Is de riem oud en versleten?*** Het is goed mogelijk dat de riem zo ver versleten is en dus niet meer naar behoren functioneert.

== De riem is eraf gevallen ==

Is de borstel nu schoon, maar valt de riem eraf in plaats van dat deze gebroken is? Dit duidt op problemen met de uitlijning of met de spanning, of beide.

* Vervang de riem.
** Oude riemen kunnen uitrekken, waardoor de kans natuurlijk veel groter is dat ze eraf lopen. Bij de meeste stofzuigers bepaalt de riem de spanning, dus als deze uitgerekt is, zul je een nieuwe riem moeten scoren. 
** Het is mogelijk dat de riem versleten en ietwat glad geworden is. Als de riem door het vele slippen opwarmt, is het mogelijk dat de riem uitzet en de spanning verliest. 
* Controleer of de borstel juist geplaatst is. Als de borstel niet goed geplaatst is, zal deze in een hoek draaien, waardoor de riem niet goed uitgelijnd is en er dus af zal lopen. 
* Sommige rechtopstaande stofzuiger bevatten een motor die parallel aan de borstelrol loopt, maar wel in het bovenste deel van de stofzuiger zit. Als er als gevolg van slijtage veel speling in de module zit, kan dit invloed hebben op de uitlijning en ertoe leiden dat de riem eraf loopt.

== De aandrijfriem slipt ==

Soms zul je zien dat de riem er nog steeds op zit en dat de borstel nog steeds enigszins draait zolang deze niets raakt. Zodra je wilt gaan stofzuigen stopt de borstel echter met draaien.

* De eerste stap is het vervangen van de riem. Het is mogelijk dat de riem uitgerekt is. 
* Controleer of de borstel in de juiste richting draait. 
** Dit komt vaker voor bij rechtopstaande stofzuigers die gebruik maken van een riem met een hoek erin, waardoor de borstel soms dingen van de zuigmond wegveegt. 
** De riem kan doorslippen, waardoor de borstel niet draait. 
* Als de nieuwe riem ook los zit, controleer je of er iets in het mechanisme verplaatst is. 
** Versleten lagers kunnen ervoor zorgen dat de spanning zodanig vermindert dat de riemen die ooit strak zaten nu niet meer op spanning staan. Vaak zijn dit de lagers van de borstelrol. 
** Het is mogelijk dat de plastic behuizing van de stofzuiger als gevolg van oververhitting een klein beetje versmelt, waardoor de motor verschuift en de riem losser komt te zitten. 
*** Je kunt proberen de motor weer op de juiste plek terug te krijgen, door bijvoorbeeld dingen tussen de behuizing en de motor te klemmen. Plaats de riem weer terug als je de motor op de oude plek hebt weten te bevestigen. 
*** Afhankelijk van de kosten kan het gemakkelijker te zijn voor een nieuwe behuizing te kiezen.

== De motor is kapot ==

Dit probleem spreekt voor zich en heeft vooral betrekking op stofzuigers met elektrisch aangedreven borstelkoppen. Sommige rechtopstaande stofzuigers hebben twee motoren: een voor de ventilator en een voor de borstel. Als geen van de bovenstaande stappen het probleem heeft verholpen, is de kans aanzienlijk dat dit het probleem veroorzaakt. Vaak is het vervangen van de motor de beste en meest praktische oplossing.

== Problemen met de luchtturbine ==

* Borstelkoppen die met een luchtturbine werken hebben vaak geen stroomkabel of elektrische verbindingen en zijn vaak kleiner. Hierdoor zijn ze wat kwetsbaarder en komen ze vaker stil te staan, helemaal als je vaak hoge of dichte tapijten stofzuigt.
* Door lucht aangedreven borstelkoppen zijn gevoelig voor verstoppingen in de stang of slang van de stofzuiger. Aangezien de borstel een volledig open luchtstroom nodig heeft om goed te kunnen zuigen, stoppen ze sneller zodra er iets in de weg zit van deze stroom. Controleer dus de slang of stang van je stofzuiger op verstoppingen als je merkt dat de borstelkop minder zuigkracht heeft. 
* Door luchtturbines aangedreven borstels zijn ook erg gevoelig voor haar dat om een lager is komen te zitten. Demonteer de borstelkop en probeer al het vastzittende vuil te verwijderen.
