If one of the screens inside your Meta Quest 3 is completely black while the other works fine, you are dealing with either a software glitch or a disconnected/damaged internal display hardware component.

Try a Hard Reboot

A standard restart might not clear a stuck display driver. A hard reboot forces the headset to re-initialize both LCD panels.

  1. Put the headset on your head.
  2. Press and hold the Power button for at least 10–15 seconds.
  3. Keep holding until the headset shuts down and completely restarts with the Meta logo.

Clean the Proximity Sensor

If the proximity sensor is partially blocked, it can cause erratic screen behavior or single-eye blackouts.

  • Locate the small, dark sensor rectangle located directly between the two lenses.
  • Wipe it firmly with a dry microfiber cloth.
  • If you use a third-party facial interface, silicone cover, or lens protector, remove it entirely to see if it is blocking the sensor.

Perform a Factory Reset

If the issue is caused by a corrupted firmware update, a factory reset is the final software troubleshooting step. Note: Ensure your cloud backups are turned on in the Meta Horizon mobile app first so you do not lose your save data.

  1. Turn off the headset completely.
  2. Press and hold the Power and Volume Down (-) buttons simultaneously until a boot menu appears on the working screen.
  3. Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset.
  4. Press the Power button to select it and confirm.

Next Steps: Hardware Check

If the screen remains black after a factory reset, the ribbon cable connecting that specific LCD to the motherboard has either wiggled loose or the panel itself is physically damaged from a drop.

If your device is still under warranty, do not attempt to open it yourself. Go to the Official Meta Support Center to open a claim and request a replacement headset.
