Check if the shift linkage is OK and moving the lever on the transmission when moving the gear shift into gear.
Here's a video that may help.
It is better to have two people to do this. One to operate the gear shift in the cabin and the other to watch if the linkage is moving the lever on the transmission.
You could do it by yourself but it would mean having to get under the engine/transmission and look where the lever is positioned (or if the linkage is even still attached) and then get out from under and go and move the gear shift in the cabin and then get under the engine again to see if it has moved the lever.

What year is the vehicle and what type of transmission does it have, automatic (AT) or manual (MT)?

Maybe gearbox, transmisson or drive shaft is broken.
