Worth replacing the Graphics thermal pad? And is it 0.5mm?

Hi folks, my G4 is now 21 years old.

I recently cleaned it all out, repasted the CPU and added an SSD. Just worried about the old thermal pad for graphics.

Would be worth replacing it with a Gelid thermal pad? It looks really thin, would a 0.5mm fit?

I still use it for retro gaming, snd my iPod classic, and just want to stay alive for longer.

Sorry I don’t remember what this series used for thermal transmission to the heat sink.

Most likely thermal paste not a pad and often it’s a bit thicker often 1.5 or 2.0 mm Silicone Thermal Pad as it is used to span a bit of distance which is common with VRAM chips used with dedicated GPU’s.

For CPU/GPU chips I strongly recommend thermal paste as you don’t want a distance between the heat source and the heat sink solution.

Definitely a pad, I pulled it all, apart and repasted the CPU with MX4. The gpu was on the bottom of the logic board with a thinnest pink pad on the g4 mini’s case that touched the ati 9200, it’s the same in the service manual. It just doesn’t give details about the pads sadly.

Edit: checking the service manual for mini 1.5ghz G4 the photo appears to have a pad 1mm thick like you mentioned. Could be its now 0.5mm due to compression.

@wozniattack - Ah! So it’s a pad using the bottom plate to dissipate the heat, that makes sense.


To verify the needed thickness you could use a pile of business cards placed on the bottom case where the pad would go stacking them up to gage what’s needed. Once you have set the thickness you can get what you need. There is gaping thermal paste Apple moved to it to save some effort applying the pads on the VRAMs. Not a lover of this TIM but that’s another possibility.

Thank you Dan. I’ll try measuring it with cards, and then likely get the Gelid Extremal pads. It’s good enough to drop temps in reviews on the RTX 4090 VRM and memory by up to 20 degrees. Should be good enough for the ati 9200.

I double checked that if I sit thermal pad, it’s has a conductivity of 6W/mK, and the Gelid extreme is 12W/mK. So much better. When I get some time off after the weekend I’ll pull apart the mini to measure the pad like you suggested, and get a new pad then.

@wozniattack - Having a more conducive pad is not an issue, it’s when the size is not correct or not making good physical contact between the two surfaces.

@wozniattack the thermal pads for this model can still be found. Check for Apple part number 922-6749 and looks like you are right about the 0.5mm

Thank you. Those cost a lot more than the Gelid Extreme ones. I wonder if we can find the thermal conductivity of the Apple ones.

The reviews for thr Gelid extreme have people using them on VRAM and memory of thr RTX 4090, and the dropping temps by up to 10-20 degrees C.

The Apple ones all appear on unknown websites ( with little to know details ) for about $53, and with shipping and customs to Ireland might be really expensive.

Tried emailing of of the places online like Mac parts depot and they’re dead. Their contact us pages, and emails all bounce.

Guys worst case I’ll try the Gelid Extreme pad and hope for the best
