A simple question regarding RAM

I always believed for system stability it was always best to use 2 RAM sticks of the same capacity (ie: 2x2GB 2x4 GB 2x8 GB) and preferably from the same manufacturer.

Someones telling me that they are using 1x2 GB & 1x 8 GB and the system still runs OK... I always thought that uneven values would cause an issue when reaching the capacity of the lower sized RAM module as the data is evenly split from the board to the RAM, no? Even though the system recognizes the different RAMS. This is something I have never done and will never ever do. What is others experience on this?

Here's an answer to your question I found on the superuser forums. The general consensus is that using RAM sticks of different capacities won't noticeably lower the performance and is OK to do.

To be clear, a CoreDuo or iSeries CPU chip RAM I/O channel can get complex! As the different series offer different channels.

So in the case of a CoreDuo it’s a single channel for the two SO-DIMM sockets. Then it’s only making sure the RAS & CAS spec of the RAM is compatible across.

With iSeries CPU’s this is the same for laptops, but desktops it’s different!

Here we have the concept of Memory Bank & Channel both of which can offer Interleaved memory.

As a rule of thumb a bank needs to hold the same RAM modules (ideally same vendor) and if the RAM is interleaved then the banks or channels need to support the same RAM, otherwise a Bank or Channel which is not interleaved can support different RAM sizes. In some systems the given channel must hold the same RAM, but a different channel can support a different RAM sizes. Give this a read Install and replace memory in your Mac Pro (2019) talk about confusing!
