Help Identifying Components / Values Please

Hi,

I'm attempting to fix my brother's steam deck. I think he's been using the wrong charger and damaged something near the battery connector.

Block Image

The smaller component that you see missing from the image looked visibly scorched but the bigger component is shorted out and looks bad too.

Edit: Turns out both these components were fine and I'm just dumb.

I'll be honest here, my soldering is very good, I replace a lot of HDMI port with a 99% success rate but I know very little about how to read datasheets to identify component values etc. (Something I'd love to work on)

But if anyone in the community can help, I'd be very grateful.

Board is Rev F if it helps.

Kind regards,

Chris

Hi guys, just thought I'd leave a little update on the repair!

I was able to fix this by replacing the charging port in the end, so I'm very pleased.

For anyone looking for compatible ports, I'll leave the link below.

Thanks again for all your input guys, I really appreciate it.

Kind regards, Chris

I am not sure if you have gotten an answer yet. But. I can confirm, this IC is the battery charger (if I recall correctly) and the scorched component is a current sense resistor. It's got a R010 on it which denotes a .01 ohm resistor.

The missing component also looks like a resistor. And as I recall, based on the datasheet for that IC, the value should match the correlating resistor on the other side of the current sense one (the one just on the other side of the big burned out component, very near to the battery port). The underlying cause however is more likely that something else downstream is bad though if that had blown out. Could be the charging IC. Could be a bad capacitor somewhere. Coulkd even be the charge port. It might be wise to just probe around with a multimeter and see if anything in that vicinity is shorted to ground.

As I recall. The last person I helped who had an issue in this area, had a bunk charge port. There may be some relevant information in that post as well. I believe I found the datasheet for that chip which may be helpful.

Firstly, thanks for replying to the my post. :)

I would have normally just replaced the port but I wasn't able to find one. I was able to test more than half the pins with a male type-c test board but I couldn't find a reference online anywhere to check each and every pin. Ideally I could do with another working board to create my own for future use lol.

I've since closed it back up but If I get the time to strip it down again in the next few days, I'll check for shorts around that IC like you suggested and update the post.

Thanks again for all your help guys, I really appreciate it.

Kind regards,

Chris

Hey there Chris,

I'm gonna tag @flannelist, since they have some good insight about the steam deck, and I will also link you to this answer to help you out, but to give you the short summary the bigger component looks like a current sense R010 and the smaller one is either a 1206 or 0805 capacitor. You can actually see it on Step 8 of iFixit's Steam Deck Motherboard Replacement, and I marked it on the photo.

Hi Jacob,

Thank you so much for replying to the post!

I can find all of these components on AliExpress at very little cost. Do we happen to know the capacitance value of the 1206/0805 or can I install something relatively universal there?

I'm in your debt, thanks again!

Kind regards,

Chris
