Powered up after opening case!

Hi,

I removed my SIM card and powered down my iPhone X prior to opening the case to do a screen change, almost immediately the phone lit up? try as I might holding one side of the case with one hand while trying to power off with my other hand it just wasn’t possible, so I immediately removed the battery connector. Before I go ahead with the screen change I was hoping that you can reassure me that nothing would have happened to the software or other parts, the phone was only with power for approximately 45 seconds.

Thanks

Hi, Whitch "screen change" repair guide are you following?

“almost immediately the phone lit up” -> I think it'a shot-circuting. You shoud warp electrical tape around the battery connector to prevent it from accidentally contacting the socket again.

"the phone was only with power for approximately 45 seconds"->Is this happend after the screen was replaced? Maybe you should think about change the battery.

Hi again no I wasn’t following any guide plan, I’ve changed batteries before successfully on iPhone 4s and 6s by following YouTube videos so I thought I’d have a go changing the X screen which was damaged. I’d not even started to remove the screen it powered up directly after opening and separating, not fully separating! I know it definitely powered down.

The big problems we see with batteries being connected and disconnected is usually when the screen is being unplugged or reconnected. Particularly with older LED based screens, it was not unusual to blow a backlight fuse or circuit. Modern OLED screens like in the iPhone X don't have a backlight so that particular issue is no longer present, but generally you will always want to have the battery unplugged when working on the phone.

But to address your particular concern, no there's actually no problem with the phone being powered up when it's open. I frequently test a replacement screen with the phone open prior to buttoning everything back up, so as long as you weren't disconnecting electronic components while the battery was still connected you should be fine.
