Cleaning/opening tools for HP Pavilion Gaming 15

Hi.

I need to open my laptop and clean the dust off the fans. What cleaning/opening tools should I get? I've never opened it up by myself before so hopefully there are some easy-to-use tools that are available.

Hi @thesmallhulk

Here is the maintenance and service guide taken from this support webpage for your laptop model.

On p.26 you will find a list of the tools required to disassemble and remove components from the laptop.

The manual also describes the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedures to remove all the components that can be removed from the laptop.

Here's the ifixit Aanbrengen van koelpasta guide if you think that the CPU and GPU may need to have the thermal paste refreshed as well as the fans needing to be cleaned.

To clean the fans use a soft brush to gently loosen the dust and then use a vacuum cleaner (lowest suction setting if it has one) to remove the loose dust.

As always with electronic devices be gentle when handling and removing components and take your time. Since you've never done this before follow the instructions as described in the guide. The steps in the procedures are there for a reason

Lastly, here's the HP parts list for your exact model. This is in case you ever need to replace any faulty parts for it in the future. Hopefully not. Search for the required part number only to find suppliers.

I've done this before by disconnecting the fan(s) and battery, and do it in place with the laptop assembled. Unless it's on old TIM, a full removal is a bit much. I generally use short bursts of air to knock the dust out, and then use a paintbrush or if you can find them, makeup brushes work well in laptops.
