Why is my screen black after booting?

What is the model number of the laptop?

Try connecting an external monitor (TV-HDMI?) to the laptop and check if there's a display on it from the laptop. Don't forget to press the appropriate function key(s) to switch the display output between laptop only, external display only or both on together.

If there's a display seen on the external monitor:

Switch the display output back to the laptop screen and then shine a flashlight at an angle close to the screen and check if you can see any images at all. They will be very faint, if they are there, so trying this in a darkened room may help.

If there are images to be seen, then there's a backlight problem with the laptop's screen. Either a backlight power supply problem on the motherboard, a faulty video cable from the motherboard to the display or a faulty backlight circuit in the screen.

If there are no images to be seen then it could be a faulty video cable/cable connection from the motherboard to the screen or a faulty screen.

If there is no display seen on the external monitor:

Then there's a motherboard problem or the laptop is not passing POST (power on self test) on startup
