Charging port set fire

So a few weeks ago my Samsung phones charging port started sparking, got extremely hot, and I could see smoke and smell burnt plastic.

The catch is that Samsung refuses to repair it for free even though it is in warranty because they claim it has water ingress.

There are some photos they sent as evidence.

Is this evidence of water being present? I cannot fathom how it could be due to water as it was on the charger for almost 3 hours straight and was never exposed to water.

I live in the UK and will take Samsung to small court if you guys think I have a chance.

Thanks for your time

@christianjuresh There are usually liquid damage indicators (LDI) on phones, you can use this guide to check if yours has been triggered.

However, note that excessive humidity can trigger the LDI as well, not necessarily just being dunked in water.

If the rest of your phone does not have corrosion damage, that is a way to argue that the phone has not been exposed to water since no other water has entered the phone.

Hi @dannish,

Just wondering if by opening the phone to check for corrosion etc, then they'll claim that the warranty has been voided and still not fix it?

Perhaps it may be better to get them to open it and if there's no evidence then they should fix it under warranty.

Cheers

@jayeff That is true. I was under the impression the phone was already disassembled from the pictures which showed the exposed motherboard, but I guess that could be Samsung's doing at the service centre.

From the pictures it still doesn't look very corroded to me though, what do you think?

@dannish

Depends on where it is i.e. Samsung repair place or at OP's.

There's not much evidence of corrosion on the board behind the connector.

If at the repair place, maybe just cleaning the port would work as it wouldn't take too long and then check. Call it a goodwill gesture ;-)

If at home then I would just disconnect the battery and clean the port with IPA99%+ and check

@jayeff Yeah it didn't look very corroded to me either.

The fire damage looks like it may get in the way of proper diagnosis, which is going to be frustrating but still worth a shot.

Like what you mentioned about warranties the other day, Samsung is notorious for not extending goodwill in warranty cases which is a real bummer here.

Worst comes to worst if Samsung won't cooperate is to try changing the charge port board first in case the problem is in the port connector itself - this may be an easier option for the OP than replacing the port only

part # is GH96-14121A costs about UK £20-£30 or about €20 (plus shipping)

I couldn't find a service manual online for the model but maybe the A52 model may be close enough, at least tio check the charging circuit etc
