Can I use phone after bending old battery during replacement?

While attempting to remove the battery from my iPhone 6s, the adhesive tabs were nowhere to be found. I tried to pry it up slowly, but ended up bending it a bit, and smelled a sweet smell that I believe is due to lithium leaking — while the battery was still in the phone. I've now finished removing the battery (by the end it was bent in a couple places and definitely smelled; I finished the removal outdoors and left it in a bucket of snow, but it didn't heat up at any point and never smoked or sparked).

What I'm wondering is: can I still use the phone itself (with a new battery, obviously)? If I wipe it down with a damp rag and it no longer has that sweet smell, is it safe to use? Is there something else I should do to make it safe?

your phone should be fine.

the only concern is if you have previously disconnected the battery from the motherboard before you started trying to remove it. if not, there's the possibility that damaging the battery may have caused a current/voltage surge which could impact the motherboard. if it was disconnected first, the motherboard should be fine, as well as the rest of the phone.
