Dad bought replacement battery kit...

So he bought the replacement battery kit, I was going to do the install for him but because I was a bit busy he got impatient and tried doing the replacement himself. I told him to make sure to watch the videos carefully when doing the replacement.

The next day he comes to me saying he cannot get the phone to work now - the screen will not come on. I take a look at the phone - the two cables that connect the screen - he ripped one of them. I asked if he took anything else out and he said he took the taptic engine chip out - (I don't know why he did that) - and the cable coming from that is ALSO ripped.

So are we just screwed here? Or if I want to get this thing fixed are there replacement cables I can buy? Thanks for your help!

Hi Jonathan,

My sympathies on having a ham-handed dad; it's my son who fills that role in my case.

Anyway, it doesn't sound like you're totally screwed, but you are in the market for at least a couple of new parts. The flex cable connecting the LCD to the motherboard isn't replaceable, so I'm afraid you're going to have to spring for a new screen. I've currently got one on order from AliExpress for $15 USD, so they're not expensive these days. Here's the one I bought.

It should be here with a couple of days, so if you want to wait to order until I verify the quality of the screen, you certainly can; I'll be glad to report back. Here's the iFixit screen replacement guide to do just that job.

Of course, if you're going to go ahead and replace the lightning port assembly as well, then replacing the screen will be part of that procedure and you won't have to do that separately, although you will need to switch the home button over to the new screen. Either way, here's the guide you'll need to fix that torn cable going to the Taptic Engine.

iPhone 7 Plus Lightning Connector Assembly Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide

Unfortunately, it's a PITA job because you have to take out so many parts to get to it, but it's all fairly straight-forward if you follow the guide. Make sure you have screen adhesive to somewhat restore the phone's waterproofing when you're putting it back together. To be honest, I usually buy a couple because they're cheap and easy to mess up and it'll save you having to wait until a replacement arrives if need be.

One final tip that isn't always explained; plug in the battery before gluing it down with adhesive; that way you'll be assured the connector will reach. I've done that myself where I glued the battery down only to find the connector was too far away from the plug so I had to completely redo the adhesive. Just don't forget to unplug it again when you go to finish the work.

Anyway, hopefully that'll get you going; let us know how it turns out!

EDIT:

Ah, I may have spoken too soon; is it definitely the flex on the Taptic engine that's torn and not the one on the lightning connector assembly? That would be easier to fix if that's the case.

My own understanding is that the basic functions of the Taptic engine will still work; it's apparently some of the advanced features that get disabled if it's replaced. I haven't seen that issue myself, but then again I don't replace a lot of Taptic engines.

I believe the programming that @fixxxm8 is referring to can be done with a device programmer like the one I have made by Qian Li called the iCopy Plus, so you may be able to take it to a repair shop that has one and get a replacement programmed for your phone, but chances are your dad won't even notice the difference, to be honest.

Thanks for the update and additional information :) Yeah just the Taptic cable got ripped along with the display cables. - he tried to remove it for some reason and yeah the cable ripped). Then again, I am wondering if I can just try to boot the phone without it?

Thanks for the heads up on the cheaper LCD displays too btw.

@jshupe I haven't personally tried, but I don't know of any specific reason why the phone wouldn't boot without a Taptic Engine. The main things you'll miss without one is the 'click' feedback of the home button and of course you won't be able to set your phone on vibrate any more.

Oh and by the way, I did get the replacement screen and installed it. Looks good; can't tell the difference between it and an original, so can recommend it as a replacement.

Ripping the cables from the screen won´t do any harm if you replace the screen.

It´s another story when ripping the Taptic engine; the engine is programmed to the logicboard. Replacing it won't recover the function of it.

Is the taptic engine required for the phone to function? Can I just replace the screen and the phone should still work (just without the vibrations)? Or is the taptic engine required for the phone to function normally?
