Had a customer hire me to install an XStation in his PS1. I knew I had the tools and capabilities, but didn't know how. So I read the guide for that particular mod and it was successful.

Now you can soft mod using a mem card.
UniROM does this and much more.
Does not work for 100% of all backup ISOs.
