Apple supports upto macOS Catalina (10.15) as the highest version. This is not a limitation based on the systems storage. So replacing the SSD won’t change that.

While Apple limits the OS level it often has to do with feature set and the added performance the newer OS needs to be functional.

There are tools which will allow you install a higher OS, but be careful! Your system may not have adequate resources and Apple won’t help you if you encounter an issue which often is a problem when updates are applied.

Thank you for the info. my question now is, I have an EMC 2639. what would I need to replace to bring this frame to a point of usefulness. Not opposed to overhauling as much as needed. just seems to be a waste to scrap. Any advice is welcome.

@jpkmp - How much RAM an storage does your system have currently?

Go to About this Mac to find out.

door

8 gb ram with 2 slots open and 999.35 gb storage with 984.82 free

@jpkmp - I would get to 16GB of RAM at least if you are doing video or music you might want more.

Adding a second drive a Blade SSD would be the next upgrade to think about. Here’s the needed part OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD and here’s the guide iMac Intel 27" 5K Retina-scherm Vervanging van de blade SSD I would get a 1TB drive.
