Laptop power lights turns on but no screen

I have an Acer Aspire V3-772G, and I recently did some upgrading on the motherboard. I am very fond of this laptop, so I usually just take it apart to look at all the parts sometimes, and I have the proper tools also. But I go to turn on the laptop now and the power light turns on like it's supposed to, but I get no power to the screen. I try shutting down the laptop using the power button and I get no response from it, it just stays on.

Update (01/01/2023)

So I figured out that the problem was a mixture of a dead RTC/CMOS Battery and a loose cable connection in the display

Perhaps you miss reconnecting one of the cables properly when reassembling. Do any other lights come, the fan spinning, etc.?

Only the power light on the power button and the power light on the palmrest. No CPU fan sounds, no HDD sounds, no ODD sounds.

Did it work after the "upgrading" or not?

What upgrades did you do?

Did you check that the power button board cable connection is OK?

door

Yes I upgraded the RAM to 12GB, made sure it was PC3-10600 or PC3-12800 which is what my CPU is compatible with. I installed a 500GB HDD hoping to install Windows 10, only to find out I couldn't turn it on. I checked my work and every cable is where it should be, nothing loose at least from what I can see.

According to what I just found out the ram for the laptop needs to be DDR3L not DDR3, so did you get PC3L-12800 or PC3 -12800?

DDR3L is dual voltage ram and will work in both 1.5V and 1.35V ram slots.

DDR3 is 1.5V working ram only and will not work in 1.35V slots.

Check what the information is that is on the ram module to see if you can find the specifications that tell you exactly what type of ram it is. Also check the originally installed ram to confirm what type of ram it is to make sure what I said is accurate about it needing to be DDR3L.

Does it turn on if you install the original ram again?

Hi @no_username

If it still doesn't work try a full power refresh and check.

What can sometimes happen is that the BIOS can become corrupted preventing a normal start. Draining all the power from the motherboard causes the BIOS to default back to its factory default state.

  • Disconnect the charger if connected.
  • Remove the main battery from the laptop.
  • Disassemble the laptop and remove the motherboard from the laptop. Then remove the RTC (Real Time Clock) coin cell battery on the underside of the motherboard. Here's a teardown video that may help. The RTC coin cell battery can be seen at 10:13 minutes into the video. When you have removed the RTC battery, measure its voltage. If it is <2.5V DC replace it. The battery model number is on the battery itself. It might be a CR2032 but double check.
  • Reinsert the RTC battery (usually +ve is on top, printed on battery)
  • Reassemble the laptop, reinsert the main battery, connect the charger and check if it turns on.

If it turns on OK, there may be a message about the date and time being incorrect. This is normal because the BIOS as been reset. Once you correct the date and time, the message won't appear the next time the laptop is started. Also any user defined BIOS settings that you have changed, to suit whatever operating requirements you have, will need to be changed back to what you changed them to, from their default state.

While this did solve the no response problem when turning on, the screen still won't turn on. I can hear the CPU fan now. I can also hear the ODD working and can press the eject button and it works. However I feel like there is more to it than just that. I will be working on it more, but thank you for now. Also I can shut it down from the power button now, before no matter how long I held it, it wouldn't turn off, I would have to disconnect the battery.

With the laptop on, try shining a torch (flashlight) at an angle close to the screen and check for any images on the screen.

They will be very faint if they are there so trying in a darkened room may help to see them.

If you can see images then there's a backlight problem.

Hopefully it may just be the backlight fuse on the motherboard.

Did you remove the main battery before upgrading the ram?

if there are no images try connecting an external monitor (TV if HDMI?) and check if it has a display OK

If it has then check the video cable connection on the motherboard

I have determined that the backlight is not the problem. However, would you mind sending a picture of the video cable connection so I know what to look for? And yes I disconnected the main battery before upgrading the RAM, that is always my first step.

Not sure as I don't know the laptop but check the cable that is being removed at 8:07 minutes in the video I linked above.

The video cable goes from the motherboard to the lid and in the video I can't see if that cable goes to the lid or not.

There seems to be two cables on the right side that go past the hinge to the lid and I think one is the antenna cable but I can't see the other one too well.

It is being disconnected at 9:22 minutes but it seems too small (not enough wires) for a video cable.

door

@jayeff I'm not exactly sure what that cable is, but I made sure that it was plugged in and working. I still can't really identify the video connection. However, when I plug my laptop into a monitor, it just shows a blank grey screen.
