Mute button does not vibrate, phone vibrates normally otherwise

Hi everyone,

my iPhone 6 mute button switches and stays in place properly but it does not cause a vibration anymore, nor does it actually mute the phone. However, the vibrator works fine: it activates as intended when the phone rings or during alarms/timers.

Before this happened, the vibration response of the mute button had been gradually getting flakier over time, requiring me to either press stronger on the button to obtain it or even to help it by tapping slightly on the phone's frame.

So clearly, the problem seems mechanical in nature. Moreover, this being an iPhone 6, the frame is so slightly bent that the back of the phone is not 100% flat anymore when laid on a horizontal surface (not sure if this is related).

How should I proceed to investigate further? Open the phone, dust it up carefully and re-assemble?

Thanks in advance!

When you say it does not vibrate, does it activate the intended setting? It sounds like it doesn't from your description. I just want to clarify.

If that's the case, sounds like a good cleaning is probably in order. Luckily, the iPhone 6 is probably the the easiest iPhone to open.

There's a Guide for replacement of the actual cable if you determine that's necessary. But just getting the phone open might give you a better idea of what's going on. Those switches can get gunked up on the interior. Just physically removing debris might be all that's necessary. But for a deep clean, follow through the guide to pull the switch out of the housing. You can use isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab to get rid of any residual crud if need be. Check the cutout in the housing where the switch sits as well as the cable and the switch mechanism itself.

Yes, you correct in assuming that the button does not trigger the mute setting either.

I have edited the question to mention this.

Thanks for the answer, I will be disassembling the beast soon. ;)
