@artandsound weak or dirty laser can do that. You can always try one of those commercially available laser lens cleaning kit. Or you can disassemble your PS3 and clean the lasers with a microfiber cloth and some distilled white vinegar (ten parts water, one part white vinegar). Of course the best thing to do would be to what this guide Laser Lens Cleaning suggest
