Have a Sony cdr and the play back side reads disc error... Won't play any type of CD ..I've used it very little..

Depending on the brand, some DVD players tend to be better about CD-R media then others, especially -RW. It may just be a poor compatibility disc; try using a different CD-R, like a Taio Yuden (preferably not from the value series, notated as VAL on the part number). Sony stamps their name on CMC and other white label brands these days, they have not made their own CD-R blanks in 15+ years.
If that does not work, the best thing to do next is to take the DVD player apart and then use a microfiber cloth (best) or Kimwipes from Kibmey Clark Science (not easy to find, I have a few boxes since I use them a lot) and 91%+ isopropyl alcohol (99% preferred, but it tends to be hidden behind the pharmacy counter or only sold online). Look for a few back screws, and 1-2 screws on the left and right sides. Once you have the metal cover off, you should have enough access to the laser you can reach it.

@sonycdr I would start by cleaning the laser itself. Use a commercially available Laser cleaning disk. You can get those at most stores. If that does not help we will have to take it apart and check the lasers. For that we would need to know the exact model number for your Sony CDR

Those cleaning discs tend to be useless. I tried one on a Samsung SDG OG Xbox with issues, didn't do a thing past a few reads. Better off using a clean microfiber cloth and IPA.
@nick sure but the problem is that you have to take it apart first. For that we will need to know the model so we can help.....
