The Early 2009 Mac Pro—also known as the Mac Pro 4,1—introduced Intel's Nehalem architecture to Apple's line of professional desktop computers in March 2009. The Mac Pro 5,1 used the same interior design but received further CPU updates in 2010 and 2012.

Your MacPro can support quite a few graphics boards. But!! The primary needs to be the one Apple sold with the MacPro systems. Its not altered (unlike the iMac (MXM bds) its just Apple needed a way to have the system access a known graphics board as the Xenon CPU’s don’t offer an internal graphics service unlike the Laptop and other desktop systems Apple makes.

Think of it this way… Every 2010 15” MacBook Pro and 27” iMac onward has dual graphics! The Intel graphics are the default graphics in these systems. And the needed driver support is within the EFI firmware. Within the early MacPro systems the default graphics is the video card sold with the system.

@danj

I would get one of these ATI Radeon HD 5870s

But they only have 1gb of Graphics Ram,

I'm wondering if i put a other GPU in the 2nd slot and kept the Gt120(APPLES card) in the 1st slot would that work?

@beanman56 - Yes! You can have both cards installed and you can define the primary display to be the second board.

@danj what card you think would be best?

I don't want to get a bad card,

And not one apples not so good cards (or not anymore at least)

would this be a good one https://www.amazon.com/MSI-RX-560-AERO-I...

@danj also how would i define the second card to be primary

door

@beanman56 - Did you review the links I posted?

As far as defining which is the primary display that's done within the Display control panel.

There is two aspects here, the primary video board and what is the primary display once the system is booted up.

One of things people mess up is they take the Apple board out and either sell it or loose it! Then they need to re-install or update their OS only to find the need for the Apple board is required.u
