Charger light orange battery not charging, is it dead?

Hi,

I revived coffee damaged MacBook Pro. Cleaned logicboard and all is working except keyboard backlight. Mousepad does not click but works. Battery is not charging at all even it has less than 200 cycles. Magsafe charging light is orange and the computer works fine as long as plugged in but dies if unplugged. Have reset SMC without effect.

Is it for sure the battery or perhaps another connector/issue inside the logicboard or the I/O board? Thanks for any advice.

Thanks Dan. I added a snapshot from coconut battery. I should also add that the computer shut itself down right after receiving the pint of hot coffee. It happened a year ago. It means i do not know if the computer was then really shut down or just sleeping, which could have discharged the battery gradually and maybe ruined it.

Not good ;-{ The charging logic is damaged on the main logic board. The Coffee did you in.

The power is not getting to the battery as we can see the MagSafe is connected ‘Power Adapter - Connected’ but the ‘Charging with’ is showing Zero Watts and the batteries current charge is Zero mAh.

All of the power is going into running of the system nothing is getting to the battery

Time to find someone who can service your logic board.

Thank you very much. I was afraid that might be the case. But better to know that now so I dont waste money on a battery without solving the issue. I am in Japan in the country side, I suspect it won't be all easy to find someone anywhere near that can repair the logic board. I'm an avid DIY'er but not experienced in this kind of stuff. I don't suppose it is at all possible to repair on my own? Anyways I realise that is not an easy question to answer but you are likely to have a very informed opinion.

Thanks again,

Simon

@hoibergenator - Sorry for the bad news, most of the time it's the comparator logic which got damaged from using a knockoff charger. It's still a very workable system for many.

Which Prefecture are you in? I spent a bit of time in Japan working on the Olympics when I was working for IBM. I enjoyed my weekend explorations into the countryside.

Don't forget to score the answer and accept the answer if you're set - Thanks!

Yes no worries -unlikely that I can fix this, but the computer works fine (still) without keyboard light and battery, as long as its only used in my home office, the large screen and nice keyboard proportions of this model is still a pleasure to use for work.

I never used a knockoff charger on it though, but I guess with a pint of steaming hot coffee on the keyboard it is no wonder that some logic was damaged...

We live in Kanagawa (70kms south of Tokyo), but in the sticks of that. Its not bad here. Surprised to hear you were in Japan preparing for the Olympics, but for sure a lot of people worked to make that run smooth behind the scenes. Yes will do and thanks for your help!

@hoibergenator - Yes, likely the Coffee did you in. Still worth the effort to get this puppy working again.

We went down to Mt Fuji by train on one trip while we didn't go through your neck of the woods, we had a few times to look out when we were passing less dense areas to Gotemba. Mostly we were up around Nagano (1970~1972) and took a trip up to Sapporo to see the 1940 Olympic site. Three visits for 4 months each. Always had a great time enjoying the local food and the sites.

Hi Dan,

Not sure if you see this. But on a whim/hunch I went out and bought a new battery and replaced it with the old swollen one in the computer. You can see here the coconut battery shows what happened.

Basically it fixed it! I am very happy man. Now the only remaining issue is the lack of keyboard light. For sure caused by the coffee spill. Would you have any idea whether that is relatively easily fixable? At this point it is just icing on the cake, and I am happy I got the macbook back to almost full functionality regardless.

Cheers

Simon
