How to reformat an SSD?

During an install the installer reported errors reading the disk. How do I reformat an SSD ? Is it as simple as running Disk Utility ?

Your systems series specs: Macmini3,1

Note Storage Interface is SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) in all of them.

Make sure the SSD you are using lists this I/O speed. if not it won't work in your system reliably!

For reference this is one of the few drives available today that would work in your system Samsung 860 EVO

Note the Interface line: SATA 6 Gbps Interface, compatible with SATA 3 Gbps & 1.5 Gbps interfaces

Basically, this is an auto sense drive which will match its I/O speed to the systems SATA ports ability. If the spec sheet doesn't list it will not work in a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) system! Don't use it!

Using either the grey CD/DVD disks that came with the system or using a FireWire drive which is setup as a bootable drive using OS-X El Capitan (10.11.x) as this is the highest version of OS-X your system will support. Using Disk Utility from it.

You can also use Linux as well, make sure the version you are planing on using supports the your system.

Do keep in mind El Capitan does not have TRIM support enabled by default. You will need to enable it following this guide How To Enable Trim On Mac OSX El Capitan make sure you are running the last maintenance release as the early versions don’t offer it.
