@jpcliff here is the SM for your Kohler engine Kohler-KT715_KT745.pdf Page 56 starts the disassembly. It also includes the starter repair etc.

model is 917986410. It's got a Kohler 22HP Engine-Model No.KT725-3023

Craftsman 22HP 42” lawn tractor. Model No. 917.986410. Kohler engine Model No. KT725-3023. I already swapped out the solenoid which helped it start for 1 day only. Battery is good. Have been hot wiring the solenoid bolts to get it running. Built in 2014 I think

@jpcliff the SM has the wiring diagram with it as well. Ultimately it sounds like you may have issues with your wiring vs the starter since it seems to work when you hot wire it.
